Dreaming in Green
New York Times - By Rob Walker - Apr 19, 2008 (News Report)

Interesting article about the Greener Gadgets Conference, which encourages citizens and big companies alike to submit new ideas for green technologies. While much of the article is devoted to a conceptual product that may never see the light of day, I would have liked to hear more about some of the other entries which could have an impact. Also, only a few sources are cited, and there is a lack of factual evidence about this important topic. Overall, this is a bit shallow for an article coming from the New York Times.

Lets carry the concept one stage further. How about all the cars from a given car manufacturer using the same head light bulb, wheel studs, inside light bulbs etc.etc and how about them staying the same for at least a decade. For that matter how about a number of different manufacturers using the same of everything they possibly can. Skunk works all cars. And how about the Yanks going metric.

The article looks at how competition can lead to waste rather than standardization. It is part of the NYT Magazine's first Green issue, which contains other articles which you may want to read and even submit here.
