Washington Post - Aug. 10 (News Report) - Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday said “nothing is off the table” to regain control of British streets — telling the nation that rubber bullets had been authorized and water cannons were on standby after violence and looting hit Manchester, Birmingham and other British cities. London, the capital, was mostly quiet overnight. But the riots that began last week after a police-involved shooting continued to rock other British cities. Under fire for the government’s handing of the disturbances, Cameron said the relative calm in London spoke to the forceful deployment of 16,000 troops on the streets.

Clean-up as England riots spread

BBC News - Aug. 10 (News Report) - The prime minister has said the "fightback" is under way, after cities in England suffered a fourth night of violence and looting. David Cameron said every action would be taken to restore order, with contingency plans for water cannon to be available at 24 hours' notice. On Tuesday night, unrest spread to cities including Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Nottingham and Birmingham. Three men aged 21, 30 and 31 died when they were hit by a car in Birmingham. Haroon Jahan, Shahzad Ali, and Abdul Musavir were taken to hospital but died from their injuries.

I remember once he wanted to give someone 100 Syrian Pounds ($2), and his family said it was too much. But Hamza said, 'I have a bed and food while that guy has nothing.' And so he persuaded his parents to give the poor man the 100." In the hands of President Bashar al-Assad's security forces, however, Hamza found no such compassion, his humanity degraded to nothing more than a lump of flesh to beat, burn, torture and defile, until the screaming stopped at last. Arrested during a protest in Saida, 10km east of Daraa, on April 29, Hamza's body was returned to his family on Tuesday 24th May, horribly mutilated.

We didn’t particularly stand in the way of that culture; we left the girls alone with it, sat idly by while they pulled it into their brains through their ubiquitous earbuds and their endless Facebook photo albums and text messages. We said, more or less, “Do your best.” And then we gave them iTunes gift cards and Wi-Fi connections in their bedrooms, and we warned them about dangerous online trends only after those trends had become so passé that we could learn about them on Dateline. And now the girls have had enough. We’ve sunk pretty low, culturally speaking, when we’ve left it to the 14- and 15-year-old girls of the nation to make one of the last, great stands for human dignity. But they’re making it, by God.
