The incredible shrinking labor force

Washington Post - By Brad Plumer - May. 05 (Opinion) - If the same percentage of adults were in the workforce today as when Barack Obama took office, the unemployment rate would be 11.1 percent. If the percentage was where it was when George W. Bush took office, the unemployment rate would be 13.2 percent. That helps explain a seeming contradiction in the unemployment numbers: The rate keeps dropping even though job creation has been soft. In April, the U.S. economy added a mere 115,000 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In a normal month, that wouldn’t even be enough to keep up with new entrants into the labor market. But in this economy, it was enough to drive unemployment from 8.2 percent down to 8.1 percent, the lowest point since January 2009. The reason why resides in a little-watched measure known as the “labor force participation rate.” That tracks the number of working-age Americans who are either holding a job or looking for one. Prevent Depression in Teens With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

U.S. News & World Report - By Nancy Shute - Jun. 05 (Review) - This latest news, in a depression study just out in the Journal of the American Medical Association, is yet another bit of evidence that cognitive behavioral therapy is a valid treatment for depression. Half of the 316 teenagers in the study, led by Vanderbilt University psychology professor Judy Garber, took part in eight weekly, 90-minute group sessions, in which they were taught problem-solving skills and practiced them. Cognitive behavioral therapy isn't traditional, long-term "talk therapy"; it's a short-term treatment, usually lasting no more than 20 sessions, based on the idea that people's thoughts cause their feelings and behaviors. Thus if people change how they think about a situation and how they respond to it, they can feel better, even if the situation hasn't changed.

Because these children speed through the regular curriculum for their grade, they need additional intellectual stimulation while they wait for the rest of the kids to learn the basics. Two central approaches are used to satisfy the educational needs of such children: acceleration and enrichment. Acceleration means studying material that is part of the standard curriculum for older students. Enrichment involves learning information that falls outside the usual curriculum--say, investigating a topic in greater depth or finding out about new topics.

And no one has written treacly Thanksgiving songs, comparable to "White Christmas" and "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire," which, I suspect, have helped make Christmas one of the prime seasons for suicide. Let us not speak of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," of whose travail we shall all have heard more than our fill as we ride up elevators and pass along the aisles of department stores.

And this time we're not talking about their pastors or political leaders. The new attention is on evangelical teenagers, who reportedly start sex earlier than their mainline Protestant peers. One gleeful headline on an Internet site recently read: "Evangelical Girls Are Easy." That is not the way I remember it. Now, in the cruel march of years, I have a child on the verge of joining the tribe of the teenager, and its rituals hold a sudden interest. In this circumstance, a parent has a choice between turning to sociology or turning to drink. So I called a bright young sociologist at the University of Virginia named W. Bradford Wilcox in search of consolation.
