Mother Jones - By Andy Kroll - Apr. 08 (Opinion) - In late February, some 70 guests arrived for dinner at a hotel near Washington, DC's Union Station. Nine members of Congress were there, including Reps. Rubén Hinojosa (D-Tex.), Raul Ruiz (D-Calif.), and Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Calif.), as was former Labor Secretary Hilda Solis . Also in attendance were lobbyists and executives for Fortune 500 companies and big industry trade groups. Lonnie Johnson, a lobbyist for ExxonMobil, sat next to Hinojosa at dinner; Walmart lobbyist Ivan Zapien gave the closing remarks . Exxon, American Gas Association, Darden Restaurants, and Coca-Cola had underwritten the event. That was how, seven weeks into the 113th Congress, as lawmakers began work on immigration reform and a tax code overhaul , powerful corporate lobbyists scored premium access to politicians. The dinner was organized by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), an obscure offshoot of the 27-member, all-Democratic Congressional Hispanic Caucus . Bernie Sanders - Jan. 09 - Despite such terminology as "fiscal cliff" and "debt ceiling," the great debate taking place in Washington now has relatively little to do with financial issues. It is all about ideology. It is all about economic winners and losers in American society.
The Bribery Aisle: How Wal-Mart Used Payoffs to Bribe Its Way Through Expansion in Mexico

Democracy Now - By Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzalez - Dec. 20 (Special Report) - New details have emerged in the massive bribery scandal behind Wal-Mart's expansion into Mexico, where the corporate giant now operates one in five of its stores. After exposing the bribery earlier this year, The New York Times has now visited dozens of Mexican towns and cities to document the payoffs the company used to get its way. We're joined by the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter who broke the story, David Barstow. As a result of Barstow's reporting, the Justice Department is now considering whether Wal-Mart violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which makes it a crime for American corporations to bribe foreign officials.
The Guardian - By Robert Reich - Nov. 22 (Opinion) - A half-century ago, America's largest private-sector employer was General Motors, whose full-time workers earned an average hourly wage of around $50, in today's dollars, including health and pension benefits. Today, America's largest employer is Walmart, whose average employee earns $8.81 an hour. A third of Walmart's employees work fewer than 28 hours per week and do not qualify for benefits. There are many reasons for the difference – including globalization and technological changes that have shrunk employment in American manufacturing, while enlarging it in sectors involving personal services, such as retail. But one reason, closely related to this seismic shift, is the decline of labor unions in the United States. In the 1950s, over a third of private-sector workers belonged to a union. Today, fewer than 7% do. As a result, the typical American worker no longer ...
NewsTrust Rating: 4.1 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Economist - Jun. 20 (Opinion) - Monday’s Supreme Court decision in Dukes v Walmart (PDF) looks tailor-made to worry those who think the court has become too business-friendly. On one side was a mammoth corporation, little loved on the left. On the other, 1.5m women (personified in the case by one Walmart greeter, Betty Dukes, pictured above) suing Walmart for alleged discrimination in pay and promotion. The court sent them home unhappy, ruling unanimously against them on one procedural question and 5-4 on the legal heart of the matter.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.6 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

While most retailers are shutting down stores, Walmart has opened 52 Supercenters since Feb. 1.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Watching the Recession in Wal-Mart's Aisles

Newsweek - By Daniel McGinn - May. 03 (News Analysis) - It's 9:20 a.m. inside a Wal-Mart supercenter just north of Denver, and three-dozen employees are gathered in the back of the electronics department. Their boss, Karisa Sprague, steps to the center of the huddle. "GOOD MORNING, KARISA," they thunder, then stamp their feet twice, clap their hands twice and shout: "TEAMWORK, HUH!" Sprague congratulates an employee named Crystal on her 10th anniversary with the company, and offers a quick pep talk. Then the employees stretch: touching toes, bending elbows, rotating wrists. It's an odd daily ritual, but in a way it makes sense. While much of America's retail landscape sits idle during this recession, these workers have a reason to warm up: even as Americans cut spending, business at Wal-Mart has never been better.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
