Wall Street Journal - By Simon Nixon - Aug. 10 (Opinion) - On the face of it, there's not much to link the London riots and the latest gyrations in global markets. The wave of violence and looting that has spread across the U.K. over the past few days has been mass criminality not a protest movement. And the global stock market rout was triggered by concerns over the euro zone, U.S. government debt and the global recovery rather than anything specific to the U.K. Indeed, the markets have singled out the U.K. as a haven, its debt now cheaper to insure than that of Germany. Even so, there's a link between the two phenomena—and it is an unsettling one. Both reflect the challenges of globalization. The creation of a rules-based multi-lateral trading system has been one of the greatest triumphs of the past 65 years. But the crash and the riots are evidence of the pressure this system is coming under from above and below.

London, the capital, was mostly quiet overnight. But the riots that began last week after a police-involved shooting continued to rock other British cities. Under fire for the government’s handing of the disturbances, Cameron said the relative calm in London spoke to the forceful deployment of 16,000 troops on the streets.

BBC News - Aug. 10 (News Report) - The prime minister has said the "fightback" is under way, after cities in England suffered a fourth night of violence and looting. David Cameron said every action would be taken to restore order, with contingency plans for water cannon to be available at 24 hours' notice. On Tuesday night, unrest spread to cities including Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Nottingham and Birmingham. Three men aged 21, 30 and 31 died when they were hit by a car in Birmingham. Haroon Jahan, Shahzad Ali, and Abdul Musavir were taken to hospital but died from their injuries.
