Iran Placing Medium-Range Missiles in Venezuela; Can Reach the U.S.

Hudson New York - By Anna Mahjar-Barducci - Dec. 08 (News Report) - Iran is planning to place medium-range missiles on Venezuelan soil, based on western information sources, according to an article in the German daily, Die Welt, of November 25, 2010. According to the article, an agreement between the two countries was signed during the last visit o Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to Tehran on October 19, 2010. The previously undisclosed contract provides for the establishment of a jointly operated military base in Venezuela, and the joint development of ground-to-ground missiles.

Global Pulse - Oct. 31 (News Analysis) - Riding high this summer, three oil-producing nations sharing a disdain for the U.S. used their petro-dollars to fund policies not in the super-power's playbook. However, with the abrupt change of worldwide, economic fortunes, oil states now have headaches of their own. Venezuela's Chavez, who blustered and spread the wealth, has become more contrite as oil income shrinks; Iran spent alot on crowd pleasing measures that did not manage to throw off the dead weight of sanctions. For now, only Russia seems able to have it both ways, pushing against the U.S. when oil was expensive, and now that it is cheap, cutting a deal with China that could change the game for everyone. "Russia's naval fleet is welcome here," Chávez said on his weekly broadcast program. "If it's possible, we'll stage an exercise in our Caribbean waters." Russian naval vessels, including a nuclear cruiser, are due to call on Venezuelan ports in late November or December, Chávez said.

Ars Technica - By Nate Anderson - Jun. 01 (News Report) - An opposition Venezuelan television station whose broadcast license has not been renewed by the government is now turning to YouTube to get its message out after its transmitter was taken over by a state-run channel. Hugo Chavez's "Bolivarian Revolution" has no time for media groups that criticize his government; Radio Caracas Televisión (RCTV) is now off the air, and another channel, Globovision, could be next, according to CNN. RCTV journalists and producers have not been arrested or stopped from working, but their main link to the public has been removed. Rather than giving up, the station has turned to YouTube, where it now has its own channel for the show El Observador. A Colombian channel is also broadcasting RCTV content into Venezuela.
