Congressional Quarterly - By Shawn Zeller - Aug. 06 (News Report) - There's probably no worse time to be a politically appointed attorney managing an important legal arm of the Bush administration. Congress continues to investigate the apparent political motives behind the dismissal of nine federal prosecutors, and the White House is continuing to stonewall such inquiries on grounds of executive privilege. Yet Scott J. Bloch, who heads the small investigative and prosecutorial executive branch agency known as the OSC, for U.S. Office of Special Counsel, apparently has hit upon a jujitsu-style means of minting political advantage out of legal investigations into possible administration improprieties, up to and including his own investigation of the U.S. attorney firings.

Salon - By Tim Grieve - Apr. 19 (News Report) - There's plenty that's troubling about Alberto Gonzales' testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee today -- despite having had weeks to prepare, the attorney general of the United States still seems to have a hard time explaining what he has done and why -- but there's something particularly noxious about the way he has tried to wrap himself in the protective cloak of others. It started this morning with his opening statement, when Gonzales made mention of the shootings at Virginia Tech. There was nothing inappropriate in his mentioning the shootings -- several senators did, too -- but Gonzales tried to use them in his defense. Saying he'd felt pride watching members of law enforcement respond to the tragedy, he said: "Moments like these underscore my commitment to the mission of law enforcement and the honor that I have to serve as the nation's chief law enforcement officer." We weren't sure how what local police did in Virginia could possibly "underscore" Gonzales' own "commitment" to the mission of law enforcement, but it turns out that the attorney general was just getting started. Throughout his testimony so far today, Gonzales has argued that attacks on him are somehow attacks on the "career professionals" who work at the Justice Department. "When you attack the department for being partisan, you're really attacking the career professionals," Gonzales said at one point today. "That's not right."

Gonzales: Criticism Damages DoJ Employees

Dick Durbin (D-IL), Gonzales cautioned against criticizing the good employees of the Justice Department: "when there are attacks against the department, you're attacking the career professionals." Sen. Durbin blew up, comparing it to those who say that criticizing the president is equivalent to criticizing the troops. Gonzales finally backed off, and both Durbin and Gonzales agreed that Gonzales was the one on the line. "Attack me," Gonzales said. I don't think he needs to ask twice.

Salon - By Mark Follman - Apr. 19 (Special Report) - Gonzales will be grilled about alleged Republican meddling on issues from corruption to cronyism, widely documented in the four months since the purge. But a Salon investigation has uncovered another partisan issue dirtying the U.S. attorneys scandal: adult pornography. Questions remain about the real reasons behind the firings and to what degree the nation's chief prosecutors were pressured to carry out the political agenda of the White House and its Republican allies. There is evidence that the politicization of the Justice Department has included recasting the Civil Rights Division and pushing election-fraud investigations in ways favorable to Republicans. Some U.S. attorneys were told they were being forced out of their posts so that up-and-coming Bush loyalists could have a chance to burnish their résumés for yet higher political appointments. Troubling allegations persist that some U.S. attorneys were fired to thwart corruption probes against Republican officials.
