What drove them into the streets, for four nights straight, to burn buses and shatter windows? Earlier Tuesday, the BBC interviewed Darcus Howe, a 68-year-old radical West Indian writer and journalist from Brixton, where some of the most violent disturbances took place over the last couple of days. Faced with a stern and flummoxed interviewer, Howe offered a rare, unvarnished glimpse into the mind of the young people in the streets this week, describing the regular mistreatment exacted upon his sons and grandsons by the police. "Our political leaders have no idea, the police have no idea," Howe said, of the level of frustration and discontent among the youth in England.

Meanwhile in Greece, thousands of workers staged a 48-hour strike and many took to the streets after the Greek Parliament approved a raft of austerity measures that include spending cuts, tax increases and privatizations as a condition for a massive bailout to avert the Eurozone’s first default.

There's no mystery here. If the United States similarly attempted to balance its budget on an accelerated time frame, the economic damage would be equally severe. The worst prescription for dealing with high unemployment would be to follow the British example.

Born in 1966, he grew up in the Old Rectory in the Berkshire village of Peasemore. His father was a third-generation partner in a City stockbroking firm, his mother a magistrate. He went to Eton, got a first in PPE at Oxford and married a baronet’s daughter. After university he joined the Conservative research department and rose swiftly up the ranks. He briefed John Major in the 1992 election and worked as a special adviser to Norman Lamont in the treasury (witnessing the 1992 sterling crisis) and to Michael Howard in the home office. In 1994, calculating that he needed to serve some time in the private sector, he took a job as communications director for Carlton Communications. He fought the Tory-held seat of Stafford but lost in the 1997 Labour landslide. He had experience, connections and charm and won selection, according to Barry Norton, “with flying colours.”
