BBC News - Oct. 05 (News Report) - Western nations have lamented China and Russia's vetoes of a UN Security Council resolution condemning Syria's crackdown on anti-government protests.

France said it was a "sad day" for Syria, while the US ambassador to the UN expressed "outrage".

The resolution had been watered down to try to avoid the vetoes, dropping a direct reference to sanctions.

Meanwhile, Syrian TV has broadcast images of a woman it said Amnesty International had declared dead.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Aljazeera - Jun. 12 (News Report) - The European Union foreign policy chief has called on Syria to allow international aid agencies in to help civilians caught up in the increasing violence.

In a statement denouncing Syria's crackdown on pro-democracy protesters, Catherine Ashton echoed US concerns about the humanitarian crisis the conflict had created and repeated her calls for the regime to change course.

"I deplore the escalating use of brutal force against protestors in Syria in recent days," Ashton said on Saturday.

"I reiterate my repeated calls on the Syrian authorities to change course.

"This includes releasing all those arrested in connection with protests, as well as other political prisoners who remain under detention despite the recent amnesty announced by President Assad.

"Those responsible for the violence and killings must be held accountable," said Ashton, calling for Damascus to comply with UN requests to cooperate with its human rights officials.

Ashton also called for Syria to lift its siege of cities where protests had taken place.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Aljazeera - By Hugh Macleod, Annasofie Flamand - May. 31 (News Report) - "He would often ask his parents for money to give to the poor. I remember once he wanted to give someone 100 Syrian Pounds ($2), and his family said it was too much. But Hamza said, 'I have a bed and food while that guy has nothing.' And so he persuaded his parents to give the poor man the 100."

In the hands of President Bashar al-Assad's security forces, however, Hamza found no such compassion, his humanity degraded to nothing more than a lump of flesh to beat, burn, torture and defile, until the screaming stopped at last.

Arrested during a protest in Saida, 10km east of Daraa, on April 29, Hamza's body was returned to his family on Tuesday 24th May, horribly mutilated.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.6 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Following the comparatively swift exits of Ben Ali in Tunisia and Mubarak in Egypt, we now have three Arab leaders who face serious challenges to their power but are proving more much difficult to dislodge: Gaddafi in Libya, Saleh in Yemen and Assad in Syria. Al Jazeera has sought information from the Syrian government on the whereabouts and condition of the reporter, Dorothy Parvaz, since losing contact with her on April 29, shortly after she arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus, from Qatar. It was five days before Syrian officials confirmed she was being held in the capital.
