OpenGlobe - By C628, OpenGlobe contributors - Oct. 05 (News Report) - Russia and China vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning the Syrian government's crackdown on protestors late on Tuesday, leading Western supporters of the bill to voice their anger at the decision.

The proposed resolution would have condemned the Syrian government over its crackdown on protesters, as well as referring to the possibility of "targeted measures" against Syria. The text had been rewritted three times by drafters France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Portugal in response to Russian and Chinese objections over teh use of the word "sanctions" in earlier versions, leading to the introduction of the "targeted measures" language.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

At least six people were killed earlier today, pushing the toll to at least 150 over the last two days. An attack on the central city of Hama began Sunday when more than 100 people were killed by government forces, and continued into Monday with another 24 dead across the country. Syria has banned most foreign journalists, making it hard to verify exactly what is happening there.
Democracy Now - By Amy Goodman - May. 09 (News Report) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has sent tanks into the country's third city, Homs, escalating a military campaign to crush a seven-week-old popular uprising against his autocratic rule. According to the Syrian human rights organization, Sawasiah, as many as 800 civilians have been killed since the uprising began. More than 10,000 people have been arrested. Today, we look at two cases. One of Syria’s most prominent human rights defenders, Haitham al-Maleh, speaks from hiding, and we look at the case of detained Al Jazeera reporter Dorothy Parvez, an American, Canadian and Iranian citizen who used to work at the _Seattle Post-Intelligencer_.
Democracy Now - By Amy Goodman - Apr. 19 (News Report) - Syrian police reportedly opened fire and used tear gas today on thousands of anti-government protesters who occupied a key square in the Syrian city of Homs. More than 10,000 protesters gathered there Monday after funerals for an estimated 25 activists killed over the weekend. They demanded the immediate lifting of Syria's longstanding emergency laws, the release of political prisoners, and the immediate resignation of President Bashar al-Assad. Meanwhile, newly released diplomatic cables from the online whistleblower WikiLeaks show the United States has secretly financed Syrian opposition groups and activities since at least 2005. We speak with Bassam Haddad, director of the Middle East Studies Program at George Mason University. Even in the Palestinian territories, the issue has been less Palestine and more the pathological inadequacies of their own governing structures that make normal civic life largely unbearable.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.1 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Twenty-five people have been confirmed dead, but witnesses say the toll could be far greater. Daraa is under curfew and the Syrian government has reportedly issued announcements telling residents they will be shot if they leave their houses. And time is working in Teheran's favor.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 5 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Middle East Online - By Rana Moussaoui - May. 12 (News Report) - Lebanon's once prominent Christian community is watching anxiously as deadly clashes rage between Muslim rival factions, amid fears that any move to join the fray would further fracture its ranks.

"Both Christian camps (in the opposition and the ruling majority) are convinced that they should not pay the price of the coup led by the Hezbollah," said pro-government figure George Adwan.

He was referring to the seizure of mainly Muslim west Beirut by the powerful Shiite militant group whose fighters overran pro-government forces in fighting that has left almost 60 people dead in six days and fanned fears for the future of the already divided nation.

"Christians are not at all keen to be drawn into the fighting and what happened in west Beirut cannot be repeated in (predominantly Christian) east Beirut," said Adwan, deputy leader of the Christian Lebanese Forces party.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.5 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

National Terror Alert - By (no author named) - Nov. 11 (News Report) - Tension with Damascus has heightened since September 6 when Israeli fighters destroyed the suspected nuclear installation in northern Syria.

"The fact that the Syrians didn't launch an immediate strike against Israel doesn't mean that they won't retaliate in due course," said an Israeli defence source. "Dimona is on the top of their list."

Tension is mounting in Israel. "Every civilian aircraft en route from Cairo to Amman, or from Jeddah to Cairo and vice versa, which deviates even slightly from its route, sets off an alarm and risks a missile being fired," said the female commander of the Patriot battery.

The unit is authorised to shoot down any aircraft which approaches, civilian or combat.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.5 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
