OpenGlobe - By C628, OpenGlobe contributors - Oct. 05 (News Report) - Russia and China vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning the Syrian government's crackdown on protestors late on Tuesday, leading Western supporters of the bill to voice their anger at the decision.

The proposed resolution would have condemned the Syrian government over its crackdown on protesters, as well as referring to the possibility of "targeted measures" against Syria. The text had been rewritted three times by drafters France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Portugal in response to Russian and Chinese objections over teh use of the word "sanctions" in earlier versions, leading to the introduction of the "targeted measures" language.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

France said it was a "sad day" for Syria, while the US ambassador to the UN expressed "outrage".

The resolution had been watered down to try to avoid the vetoes, dropping a direct reference to sanctions.

Meanwhile, Syrian TV has broadcast images of a woman it said Amnesty International had declared dead.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

At least six people were killed earlier today, pushing the toll to at least 150 over the last two days. An attack on the central city of Hama began Sunday when more than 100 people were killed by government forces, and continued into Monday with another 24 dead across the country. Syria has banned most foreign journalists, making it hard to verify exactly what is happening there. We speak with Ziad Majed, assistant professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the American University of Paris and coordinator of the Arab Network for the Study of Democracy.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.9 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Washington Post - Jun. 25 (Editorial) - Another week has passed since President Obama delivered the May 19 address in which he pledged to use “all of the diplomatic, economic and strategic tools at our disposal” to oppose repression and support democratic transitions across the Middle East. In that time, the uprising in Syria has passed its 100th day with no end in sight — and no letup in the regime’s murderous violence. Another 15 people, including two children, were gunned down by security forces in protests on Friday, according to the Associated Press. That followed an offensive on Thursday by Bashar al-Assad’s forces against several villages near the border with Turkey, where many refugees had gathered. More than 1,000 crossed the border, bringing the Syrian refugee total in Turkey to more than 11,000.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.2 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
