Gene Expression - By Razib - Nov. 13 (Special Report) - there is a good deal of circumstantial evidence suggesting that racial resentment eroded Obama's support among white voters. His gains relative to Kerry were significantly smaller in states with large numbers of African-Americans--a pattern disguised in the overall vote totals by his strong support among African-Americans themselves. In the former Confederacy he gained only slightly over Kerry among white voters, despite making big gains in two key swing states, North Carolina and Virginia. The only states in the country in which he lost more than a point or two of white support were Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

Salon - By Michael Scherer - Oct. 30 (Special Report) - The damage could be exacerbated at the hands of the opposing party. While Democrats ignore the state, save for the occasional fundraiser, Republican candidates have been traveling down here at a furious clip, with at least two of the campaigns pinning their nomination strategy on the state. That means that Floridians can expect to be bombarded with Republican television and radio spots for much of January, when the Democrats will be silent. And the state Republican Party has already moved to exploit the turmoil on the other side, running Internet spots highlighting the fact that Democratic candidates have raised $10 million in Florida but won't meet with voters.

Columbia Tribune - By Terry Ganey - Oct. 20 (News Analysis) - The Missouri Plan works this way: The governor selects the judges for top court positions from panels of three candidates selected by commissions made up of lawyers, public representatives and a judge. Judges who are selected this way must later stand for retention by the voters. The system was devised in 1940 to replace the statewide election of Supreme Court judges.
