Khosla Ventures Is Raising, Like, A Billion Dollars

TechCrunch - By Robin Wauters - May. 19 (Opinion) - Venture capital firm Khosla Ventures is raising $1 billion for its new fund, Khosla Ventures IV, an SEC filing reveals. From the looks of it, the new fund will be roughly the same size as the previous one (raised in September 2009).

Young Women Need to Protect Themselves

New America Media - By Valerie Klinker - Nov. 01 (Opinion) - Rape is a big issue in our society because it has occurred for thousands of years. Rape dates back to the early American days, when Native Americans, Blacks, and Mexicans all got raped by white men, who also stole their land. I know plenty of women who have been raped. To protect themselves, now they're much more careful. They stay strapped up and watch their surroundings. It's like safe drinking or having a small child; the way you would watch others is the way you're watch out for yourself. Young women shouldn't be naïve and assume rape wouldn't ever happen to them. Don't be the only girl in a crowd full of boys who are drinking. It's just not safe.

In recent years, the industry and the region as a whole has moved left. The Reagan tax cuts removed government as an obstacle to progress, helping make possible the era of Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Facebook. And Bill Clinton was wise enough not to tinker -- by and large -- with the Reagan consensus on free enterprise and capital formation.

Oakland mourns

Salon - By Gary Kamiya - Mar. 28 (Opinion) - The four officers' murders stunned and saddened the broad Bay Area community, but there had been a few discordant notes. There's long been tension between the Oakland Police and the city's low-income black community, as in most other big cities. It was inflamed most recently by the New Year's Day killing of unarmed Oakland resident Oscar Grant, who was shot by BART police, not Oakland cops. Despite this tense background, most Oakland residents of every race and class were horrified by the killings, but there were a few examples of callousness and cruelty. The Associated Press reported that about 20 residents taunted police when they came to retrieve their fallen comrades in East Oakland on Saturday. The irrelevant resistance group Uhuru House even held a poorly attended rally Wednesday to defend Lovelle Mixon and criticize the police who killed him.
