Wired - By Jonah Lehrer - Nov. 30 (Special Report) - The human mind sees minds everywhere. Show us a collection of bouncing balls and we hallucinate agency; a glance at a stuffed animal and we endow it with a mood; I’m convinced Siri doesn’t like me. The point is that we are constantly translating our visual perceptions into a theory of mind, as we attempt to imagine the internal states of teddy bears, microchips and perfect strangers.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

It was, she said, a "remarkable moment," because a lawyer was telling potential harassment victims to "shut up," and seemingly threatening them with some kind of retribution if they didn't.

Pointing to the heap of abuse that Sharon Bialek, the first accuser to go public, has received, Maddow said that the threat "does not appear to be idle."
NewsTrust Rating: 4.2 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Dominique Strauss-Kahn: Will Media Learn Anything?

Mediactive - By Dan Gillmor - Jul. 03 (Opinion) - In the days ahead — and especially after New York prosecutors drop their increasingly pathetic case against former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn, as they surely will — you’ll see some media coverage of journalism’s role in this debacle. There will be a few notes about how everyone rushed to judgment.

But almost no one will be asking more basic questions about the way journalists go about their business in criminal cases. You will see little or no self-reflection about the way reporters work in concert with law enforcement in almost all such cases, in ways that are designed by the police and prosecutors to stack the deck against the accused.

It starts with the “perp walk” — the parading of the accused before cameras. Try this thought experiment. Imagine you’ve been arrested, and have spent a night in a filthy jail cell, getting maybe an hour of sleep in the clothes you were wearing the day before. Or, perhaps, you’ve been told to put on an orange jump suit that prisoners wear. Either way, now you’re shackled and frog-walked into a van that takes you to the courthouse. Then you’re manhandled out of the van and are frog-walked through a gauntlet of cameras and shouting reporters.

How do you imagine you’d look, whether or not you were innocent? You’d look guilty as hell, because the perp walk is designed to make you look guilty. (For more on perp walks, see this piece from the Poynter Institute’s Al Tompkins.)
NewsTrust Rating: Not rated yet - See Info » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Lessons of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn affair

The Daily Beast - By Bernard-Henri Lévy - Jul. 02 (Opinion) - The Strauss-Kahn affair is not over.

For it to be over, the American system of justice must pursue its investigation and work to the very end.

If it’s truly to be over, Dominique Strauss-Kahn must be granted not only his freedom, but—even more importantly—restoration of his honor.

In other words, “the Strauss-Kahn affair” will continue to be regarded as such as long as it hasn’t been clearly established that there never was any affair at all—and that the plaintiff, not content to have lied about this or that aspect of her past, also lied in accusing the former head of the IMF of having raped her.

And yet, given recent revelations, we can already draw a few lessons from what will ultimately—no doubt very soon—be known as the Strauss-Kahn non-affair.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Condé, as it turns out, also has extensive ties to major political players in France, including people close to—wait for it—both President Nicolas Sarkozy and Strauss-Kahn, who had been expected to be the incumbent’s main challenger in next year’s elections. You can see why the conspiracy-minded French find the case so fascinating.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.9 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

AlterNet - By Sarah Jaffe - Jun. 29 (News Analysis) - Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association isn't just about video games. Within the decision, concurring opinion, and two dissents lie a host of issues, from whether pornography is really worse than depictions of violence to whether minors have any free speech rights at all (Clarence Thomas says, essentially, no). There's a discussion of whether the inherent interactive nature of games makes them different from previous media, and an acknowledgement that every medium before has produced a similar panic.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.0 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

But for anyone who searched Google for "Santorum," those weren't the first items they saw.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.4 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The Electoral Effect of Sex Scandals

New York Times - By By NATE SILVER - Jun. 12 (News Analysis) - One point frequently raised in the coverage of Representative Anthony D. Weiner is that David Vitter, the Lousiana Senator who in 2007 acknowledged that he was a longtime client of a Washington-based prostitution service, did not resign his seat. In fact, Mr. Vitter won re-election with 56.6 percent of the vote last November.

It’s not clear, however, that Mr. Vitter paid no price at all with his constituents. Mr. Vitter’s 19-percentage point margin of victory over his Democratic opponent, Representative Charlie Melancon, was quite solid. But incumbent Republican senators in five other Southern states — Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma and South Carolina — won their elections by an average of 28 percentage points. (That’s what happens when you’re an incumbent in a very Republican part of the country in a very Republican year.)

Perhaps a better comparison is to look at Mr. Vitter’s results against those of the four Republican incumbents in the House of Representatives who ran against Democratic opposition in Louisiana last year. These were the incumbents in the First, Second, Fourth and Sixth Congressional Districts. (Louisiana’s Third Congressional District had no incumbent, while the Republican incumbents in the Fifth and Seventh Districts did not have a Democratic challenger.)
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 6 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Huge numbers of people prance around flamboyantly condemning behavior in which they themselves routinely engage.
