I doubt you will ever find a politician more desperate to believe Nietzsche's aphorism that whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger than Mitt Romney. With former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum announcing that he is suspending his presidential campaign, it ensures what many political observers have assumed for quite some time – that Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee for president this autumn. Only 26 other men have achieved this goal, so congratulations to Romney are in order. But a larger view of Romney's political situation takes some of the bloom off this particular rose. Have the past 12 months of campaigning – while certainly not killing him – really made Romney stronger? So far the evidence is not very good. Only 34% of Americans have a positive view of Romney, which makes him at this point in the presidential campaign one of the least popular presumptive ...
NewsTrust Rating: 4.0 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Winning Ugly, but Winning

New York Times - By Nate Silver - Jan. 04 (Opinion) - Mitt Romney's narrow victory in Iowa looks ugly on the stat sheet, but it accomplished quite a bit when you consider the broader context.

The two most important things that Mr. Romney accomplished are as follows:

First, Mr. Romney eliminated Rick Perry from the nomination contest. Of course, Mr. Romney got a lot of help from Mr. Perry himself. Maybe we should use the passive voice — Mr. Perry was eliminated from the nomination contest. The conclusion is the same: the man who once looked like Mr. Romney’s most formidable rival has suspended his campaign.

The result was not unexpected based on late-stage polling — in fact, the polling average nailed Mr. Perry’s share of the vote almost to the decimal point.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.0 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Rick Perry lashes out at President Barack Obama by using the president's words.

The ad, which debuted Nov. 16, 2011, opens with a video clip of Obama saying, "We've been a little bit lazy, I think, over the last couple of decades." Perry then appears, saying: "Can you believe that? That's what our president thinks is wrong with America? That Americans are lazy? That's pathetic."
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

In foreign policy, there is often no right or wrong answer; the results of a policy are often ambiguous and its effectiveness is usually only determined by history. Still, there were a number of statements made by the candidates that were factually challenged, exaggerated or lacking context.
nationofchange.org - By Jim Hightower - Sep. 21 (News Analysis) - Once again, the Texas-governor-who-wants-to-be-your-president is flitting hither, thither and yon — spreading little "Perry Tales" about his record. The bonny prince is trying to make it to the big White House in Washington. It's a bit of a strange quest, because he calls the Capital City "a seedy place," and he tells the commoners in the land that he hates — nay, deeply loathes! — the very government that he wants to head. With his tea party hat carefully positioned atop his bounteous crop of perfectly coifed hair, Prince Rick warns the commoners that big government is bad, bad, bad — because it intrudes into their lives, forcing things like Social Security and Medicare on them.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.1 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Texas poverty figures challenge Rick Perry jobs record

The Guardian - By Paul Harris - Sep. 15 (Fact Check) - Republican frontrunner Rick Perry has put his economic record as Texas governor at the heart of his presidential nomination campaign, but a report has painted a stark picture of rising unemployment and spiralling poverty in the state.

The policy paper, published by the Austin-based non-partisan Center for Public Policy Priorities, said poverty in Texas was currently higher than the rest of the US and was growing faster.

The paper said poverty rates in Texas had jumped from 17.3% in 2009 to 18.4% in 2010, and compared them to figures for the US of 14.3% in 2009, rising to 15.1% in 2010. That suggests there are currently around 4.6m Texans living in poverty, which is currently defined as an income of $22,113 a year for a family of four.

Frances Deviney, one of the CPPP co-authors of the study, said the figures showed Texas's recent economic policies were not improving the lot of many ordinary Texans, even though some segments of Texan society did well at high income levels.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Huffington Post - By Jason Linkins - Sep. 15 (News Analysis) - Prosecutors firmly established Buck's guilt, but to secure a capital punishment conviction in Texas they needed to prove "future dangerousness"—that is, provide compelling evidence that Buck posed a serious threat to society if he were ever to walk free. They did so in part with the testimony of a psychologist, Dr. Walter Quijano, who testified that Buck's race (he's African American) made him more likely to commit crimes in the future (Quijano answered in the affirmative to the question of whether "the race factor, [being] black, increases the future dangerousness for various complicated reasons.")
NewsTrust Rating: 4.1 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Fact Check: Did Rick Perry Double Texans' Taxes?

ABC News - By Amy Bingham - Sep. 14 (Fact Check) - The Republican presidential debate started to look more like a Texas showdown Monday night when Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, accused his governor and fellow GOP candidate Rick Perry of doubling his taxes.

“I’m a taxpayer there. My taxes have gone up. Our taxes have doubled since he’s been in office,” Paul said in response to the question about whether Perry should get credit for Texas’ job growth. ”So I would put a little damper on this but I don’t want to offend the governor because he might raise my taxes or something.
”
But while Paul’s taxes have gone up in the decade Perry has been governor, the increase seems to have resulted more from the rising value of his house than policies handed down from the State House.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Mitt Romney led the attacks on the Republican frontrunner, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, by saying that Perry didn't support the retirement program. "In writing his book, Gov. Perry pointed out that … by any measure Social Security has been a failure," Romney said. We checked Perry's book and found Romney was right.
