Minding the Campus - By Mary Grabar - Apr. 22 (Opinion) - After spending four depressing days this month at a meeting of 3,000 writing teachers in Atlanta, I can tell you that their parent group, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, is not really interested in teaching students to write and communicate clearly. The group’s agenda, clear to me after sampling as many of the meeting’s 500 panels as I could, is devoted to disparaging grammar, logic, reason, evidence and fairness as instruments of white oppression. They believe rules of grammar discriminate against “marginalized” groups and restrict self-expression.

Once, for example, the conservative crackpot David Horowitz (whom I’ve never met) told the Boston Globe I was a “hard core Marxist propagandist.” Then there was the time South Africa’s apartheid-era Defense Minister, Magnus Malan, denounced our weekly public television series South Africa Now as a Communist plot hatched in Mozambique… That’s why it was so thrilling to learn I’d just joined Shirley Sherrod as an actor – albeit in an exceedingly minor role, alas — in another gussied-up, phony “journalism” beatdown by the conservative crackpot Andrew Breitbart. The news came in the form of an email “heads up” from Tracy Van Slyke, Project Director of The Media Consortium, a professional network of progressive media outlets of which my company Globalvision is a “card-carrying,” dues-paying member. Turns out that a hit job about The Consortium had been posted on one of Breitbart’s web sites, comically called Big Journalism.

When it comes to the black/white divide in America, Obama is believed to be everything from Clarence Thomas to Malcolm X, depending on whom you ask. The right-wing identifies Obama as a radical black man who hates white people, and the progressive black community sees Obama as yet another political sellout fresh off Harvard Yard. The "great" Bill Cosby once said, "I don't know the recipe for success. But the recipe for failure is trying to please everybody." Therefore, in Cosby's world, every high ranking black political figure, including Obama, is destined for certain failure. Whether Obama will go down as a failure or success as president has yet to be determined. I personally believe that his greatest achievement occurred when he was sworn in as the first black president in American history. Like any good marriage, things can sometimes head straight downhill after the honeymoon.

Nicknamed the Tan Klan or Latino KKK, the Brown Berets are a paramilitary organization founded in the 1960's that support illegal immigration as a way to forge a racially pure homeland for Latino's by overthrowing part or all of the United States. Many of these brown Nazis call their plans for a racist homeland 'Aztlan'. While this woman brazenly screams racist comments through a bull horn, she can do so because the Obama administration and most of the major news networks in America have her back.
