For many in America, Islamabad has been nothing short of perfidious since joining a strategic alliance with Washington 10 years ago: selectively cooperating in the war on extremist violence and taking billions of dollars in aid to do the job, while all the time sheltering and supporting Islamist militant groups that fight NATO troops in Afghanistan. U.S. Slashes $800 Million in Military Aid to Pakistan

ABC News - By Imtiyaz Delawala - Jul. 10 (News Report) - In a sign of tensions with Pakistan following the U.S. raid on former Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, White House chief of staff Bill Daley said today that the U.S. will suspend some $800 million in aid to Pakistan's military. "Obviously they have been an important ally in the fight on terrorism. They've been the victim of enormous amounts of terrorism," Daley said. "But right now they have taken some steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid which we were giving to their military, and we're trying to work through that." Daley confirmed a report in The New York Times this morning that "up to about $800 million in military aid and equipment, or over one-third of the more than $2 billion in annual American security assistance to Pakistan, could be affected" because of concerns over Pakistan's expulsion of American military trainers, as well as Pakistan's ineffectiveness in fighting militants.

For Pakistan, monsoon rains bring fresh fears

Aljazeera - By Mujib Mashal - Jul. 03 (News Report) - Last summer, devastating floods caused by heavy monsoon rains swept across Pakistan, disrupting the lives of close to 20 million people. Nearly 2,000 Pakistanis were killed, 1.5 million houses were destroyed and over 11 million people displaced from their homes. "The world has never seen such a disaster," UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon declared during a visit to the flood affected areas. Most of the displaced have returned to start rebuilding their homes, government and UN officials say. But some had nothing to return to, so they remain in displacement camps. Those who did return fear that they might lose it all once again. The Pakistani government and the United Nations have sent out flood warnings already as the Monsoon season this year arrived a week earlier than usual. Heavy rains will continue through most of July and August as the monsoon moves from northern India and sweeps across Pakistan.

Afghanistan: Roadside bomb kills returning refugees

BBC News - Jul. 02 (News Report) - At least 11 members of a family have been killed by a roadside bomb in the southern Afghan province of Zabul. The family, including women and children, were thought to be refugees returning home from Pakistan. They were driving their van through Shamulzayi district when the blast occurred. They are thought to have been heading for Ghazni province. Roadside bombs are a weapon commonly used by the Taliban in their war against western forces.

I remember feeling very scared because there was still popping and hissing and small explosions, and the building was collapsing. It was still very fresh and there was a risk of another bomb. It was one of those situations where you have to put fear aside and focus on the job at hand: to watch the situation and document it. Cables show US special operations in Pakistan

Aljazeera - May. 21 (News Report) - Pakistan's government called for the US to step up drone strikes, and asked for US special forces troops to be embedded at Pakistani military bases, leaked cables published by a Pakistani newspaper have revealed. The classified US diplomatic cables were published on Saturday by Dawn, Pakistan's largest English-language newspaper, detailing close relationships between American and Pakistani militaries and intelligence services. Dawn reported that it had signed a deal with Julian Assange, the leader of the online whistleblowing organisation WikiLeaks, to obtain exclusive access to more than 4,700 US cables dealing with Pakistan. It began publishing those cables and its coverage of them on Saturday and said its reporting would continue "in the following days." The first batch of cables shows that Pakistani officials, including those as high-ranking as Army Chief of Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, explicitly asked US representatives to increase drone activity in Pakistan - the kind of request no Pakistani politician or government official would be comfortable making in public.
