Columbia Journalism Review - By Greg Marx - Jul. 08 (Opinion) - The New York Times today offers a dispatch on the health care debate from Maine, home of an endangered species: moderate Republican senators. The piece offers a solid look at the debate playing out among different constituencies to win the hearts and minds of Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, whose votes may determine whether key features of the reform proposal—such as a “public option” that would compete with private health care insurers—survive. And it notes that while Snowe is so far the only Senate Republican to back a public option, Collins has “expressed reservations” about such a move. But it leaves out one interesting tidbit. There’s nothing unusual in one of a state’s major companies making donations to its elected officials, of course, and Collins isn’t slavishly bound to her donors’ interests. (In fact, the story quotes one advocate who thinks the biggest influence on Collins’s vote may be Snowe’s.) But as the press tracks the health care debate, it should follow the money—and report what it finds—at every step.

It's the fourth state in the country to allow same-sex marriage—Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa legalized it as a result of court orders—and the first in the country to do so through a vote of its elected leaders.

The Nation - By John Nichols - Mar. 07 (Opinion) - When Vermont Governor Jim Douglas, a Republican with reasonably close ties to President Bush, asked if there was any additional business to be considered at the town meeting he was running in Middlebury, Ellen McKay popped up and proposed the impeachment of Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. The governor was not amused. As moderator of the annual meeting, he tried to suggest that the proposal to impeach -- along with another proposal to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq -- could not be voted on. But McKay, a program coordinator at Middlebury College, pressed her case.

With the lure of history, literary sites, theatre, museums, refined architecture, and hospitable natives, it will soon be too painful for those whose blood pressure rises at the prospect of windmills in the briny. Londoners will benefit from the recently approved pair of windfarms in the Thames Estuary. The smaller one, the Thanet Project, will have 100 turbines the same distance from shore as the Cape Wind will be.

He was that guy who came out of nowhere to beat Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut Democratic primary in 2006, only to turn around and lose to him in the general election when he got too cautious and stopped running the hard-charging campaign that had excited everyone in the first place. I really thought he was going to win there for a while. He probably could have, but, hey, hindsight is 20/20 -- too late to do anything about it now." That's not a real quote -- yet. But if things keep going the way they're going in the Senate race in Connecticut, you're likely to hear many variations on it in the years to come. Which would be too bad -- especially because it's so preventable.
