Federal, state governments establish Atlantic offshore wind energy consortium

A new Bureau of Ocean Energy Management at Interior will oversee the development of wind and other renewable energy resources on the Outer Continental Shelf in cooperation with the states as well as other stakeholders.

Environmental Activists Bring Coal Fight to Seacoast

Portsmouth Herald News - By Jeanné McCartin - Feb. 05 (News Report) - There's 600 miles as the crow flies between New Hampshire and West Virginia's mountain coal country. Worlds apart. No connection beyond a national affiliation. Deb Cinamon Whalen of East Kingston, like many of her fellow New Hampshire-ites, held that view -- if she ever gave it any thought at all. But since becoming aware there's a grave thread between them, Whalen has become a connection between the states and is trying to forge an ever-greater awareness of how the two are tied together. "It's coal," she says. "Mountain Top Removal." Her interest and concern led her to Larry Gibson, a West Virginian environmental activist who has made it his calling to enlighten those outside Kayford Mountain home that we're in this together. Whalen has helped arrange a number of events featuring Gibson, here to shed light on a dark subject. "Most of us don't think we use coal. ...; But we use it for our electricity here in New Hampshire." Much of it comes directly from Mountain Top Removal (MTR), she says.

The costs of local government are simply rising at a rate far faster than the revenues used to pay for services. Though homeowners have been howling over steadily rising bills, overall property tax collections are held in check by Proposition 2 1/2, the state's landmark tax cap measure. State aid to cities and towns, which has become an increasingly important source of funding for local governments because of the property tax cap, has risen only modestly in recent years--after deep cuts during the state budget crisis several years ago. Add soaring health care and pension costs, and you have a recipe for municipal disaster. One result has been a creeping government-by-subscription, with residents now asked to pay out of pocket for everything from trash pick-up to joining the high school football team, while local officials cast about for creative fixes to keep core departments running.

Region urged to collaborate on emissions

Bangor Daily News - By Kevin Miller - Dec. 19 (News Report) - A Maine-based environmental policy group released a regional plan Monday that its authors said would dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions in New England and eastern Canada while setting a national precedent on energy policy. Representatives of Environment Northeast said implementation of the more than two dozen recommendations in their "Climate Change Roadmap" could yield a 75 percent reduction in regional emissions linked to global warming by 2050. In terms of total tonnage, that would translate into reducing emissions from 345 million metric tons of emissions to 86 million metric tons.

Firedoglake - By Jane Hamsher - Oct. 24 (News Report) - The debate was very high temperature from the get — take a look at the YouTube of Lamont supporters marching with the Kiss Float beforehand. There were people in the debate hall who were singing and distrupting both Lieberman and Lamont, and they were evidently Lyndon LaRouchites, but Persecution Complex Lieberman of course blamed Ned (it was actually Lamont staffers who tried to kick them out of the hall). The Last Honest Man owes both Ned and his supporters an apology, but nobody is holding their Joementum. The Channel 8 live stream was buggered so I only got to see a portion of it, but it was nice to see that when Joe called Ned a liar once again, Ned had finally had enough. Vote for who you think won the debate. UPDATE: Evidently after the debate Lieberman walked up to Ned and said "You goddamn sonovabitch," and something to the effect of "how dare you run those direct mail pieces accusing me of voting for the energy bill in 2005 because of campaign contributions from the oil companies." Joe's losing it.
