Japan marks one year since quake and tsunami disaster

Associated Press - Mar. 11 (News Report) - Services held to remember the earthquake and tsunami which killed thousands and left communities devastated one year ago With moments of silence and prayers, Japan has begun marking one year since the massive earthquake and tsunami struck the nation, killing just over 19,000 people and unleashing the world's worst nuclear crisis in a quarter century. At dawn in the devastated northeastern coastal town of Rikuzentakata, dozens of people from across Japan gathered to offer prayers in front of a solitary pine tree that stands amid the barrenness, a symbol of survival. Some returned to where their houses and those of friends once stood, and placed flowers and small gifts for loved ones lost in the disaster. Naomi Fujino, a 42-year-old Rikuzentakata resident who lost her father in the tsunami, was in tears recalling 11 March, 2011. The question is: why do we reserve this kind of collective action for natural disasters and external attacks? The fact is, we have another crisis that's been hovering over the entire United States for almost three years now and shows no signs of blowing over. The numbers -- including over 25 million unemployed or underemployed Americans -- should be just as scary as the ones that have dominated our national conversation about Irene. With the toll that the job crisis is taking on the lives of millions of people in this country -- from college graduates who can't get jobs to middle class families being thrown out of their homes -- this is a category 5 disaster.

7.0 earthquake strikes off Japan coast

CNN - Jul. 10 (News Report) - A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of northern Japan Sunday, prompting tsunami advisories for several coastal regions, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. Small tsunamis were observed along the coast, measuring between 10 and 20 centimeters, said the JMA. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, according to the Japanese news agency Kyodo. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 10:57 a.m. at the epicenter, about 130 miles east of Sendai.

For Pakistan, monsoon rains bring fresh fears

Aljazeera - By Mujib Mashal - Jul. 03 (News Report) - Last summer, devastating floods caused by heavy monsoon rains swept across Pakistan, disrupting the lives of close to 20 million people. Nearly 2,000 Pakistanis were killed, 1.5 million houses were destroyed and over 11 million people displaced from their homes. "The world has never seen such a disaster," UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon declared during a visit to the flood affected areas. Most of the displaced have returned to start rebuilding their homes, government and UN officials say. But some had nothing to return to, so they remain in displacement camps. Those who did return fear that they might lose it all once again. The Pakistani government and the United Nations have sent out flood warnings already as the Monsoon season this year arrived a week earlier than usual. Heavy rains will continue through most of July and August as the monsoon moves from northern India and sweeps across Pakistan.
