Climate Migration Will Affect the World’s Security

The world’s population will be up to 9 billion people according to the United Nations—an increase of one-third. More than 90 percent of this growth will take place in developing countries. Estimates also predict that 200 million people will be newly mobilized as climate migrants by 2050 due to global warming’s effects. This increased migration will very likely affect global security, which makes it imperative for the United States and other nations to begin formulating responses to climate migration now.

"A major challenge for Africa is that large parts of the continent are cut off from remittances sent from relatively rich countries, as migration mostly takes place within African countries and regions. Another major challenge is the existence of a poorly developed financial system that often leaves rural populations cut off from official banks and financial services."

The country that those immigrants came to, or thought they were coming to, no longer exists. It has changed beyond all recognition--far beyond and more radically than the inevitable change that has accompanied human existence since the dawn of civilization. A sense of continuity has been lost, disconcerting in a country with an unwritten constitution founded upon continuity.
