Plenty to question in GOP debate

Associated Press - Dec. 14 (Fact Check) - When Michele Bachmann accused Newt Gingrich in the latest Republican debate of once supporting a cap-and-trade program to curb global warming, he huffily denied it and told her she should get her facts straight. Actually, she did. As recently as 2007, Gingrich "strongly supported" the idea. Viewers did not always get the straight goods Saturday night from other presidential hopefuls, either. Mitt Romney erred in saying Barack Obama was the only president to cut Medicare. If Rick Perry had been a betting man, he probably would have lost the $10,000 wager Romney wanted to make with him to settle competing assertions. Murdoch's News Corp accused of trying to bribe Australian senator

The Guardian - Nov. 23 (News Report) - Federal police investigate Bill O'Chee's claim he was offered favourable coverage if he voted against digital TV laws Australian police are investigating a former senator's allegations that an executive from Rupert Murdoch's News Limited offered him favourable newspaper coverage and "a special relationship" in return for voting against government legislation. Bill O'Chee made the allegations in a nine-page statement to police and they were published Wednesday by Fairfax Media newspapers, rivals of News Corp's Australian subsidiary. The newspapers reported that an unnamed executive of News Ltd asked O'Chee during a lunch on 13 June 1998 to vote against his conservative government's legislation on the creation of digital TV in Australia. The News group stood to profit from the legislation failing. The Australian federal police said in a statement on Wednesday that O'Chee's allegations had been under investigation since 4 November. Ron Paul, R-Texas, accused his governor and fellow GOP candidate Rick Perry of doubling his taxes. “I’m a taxpayer there. My taxes have gone up. Our taxes have doubled since he’s been in office,” Paul said in response to the question about whether Perry should get credit for Texas’ job growth. ”So I would put a little damper on this but I don’t want to offend the governor because he might raise my taxes or something. ” But while Paul’s taxes have gone up in the decade Perry has been governor, the increase seems to have resulted more from the rising value of his house than policies handed down from the State House.

CBS News - By Brian Montopoli - Aug. 17 (News Analysis) - The first time you see Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry, it hits you immediately: The Texas governor has the swagger of a movie star. It's there in his alpha-male confidence, his Marlboro Man drawl, his propensity for cowboy boots. This is a guy who used one shot with his laser-sighted pistol to take out a coyote that was menacing his dog during a jog last year; at the Iowa state fair Monday, as he "chomped on meat and a hard-boiled egg and struck rugged poses," the strong gun rights advocate notably declined to tell Politico's Ben Smith whether he was packing. Perry's swagger has helped him become the longest-serving governor in Texas history. Comments that have raised red flags among some Americans - such as his suggestion that Texas may have to secede from the union if "Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people" - have only enhanced Perry's reputation among his supporters. Perry was born in rural Texas to a pair of tenant farmers; he has discussed in interviews how he didn't have indoor plumbing when he was young, and how cracks in the walls allowed dust storms to leave a coating of dust on the couch. For many Republicans, particularly Tea Partiers desperate for a populist voice, he represents a welcome break both from what they see as the passionless, urban intellectualism of President Obama and the calculating, country-club Republicanism of Perry's chief rival for the nomination, Mitt Romney.
