citizensvoice.com - By Csheaffer@Citizensvoice.Com - Feb. 09 (Special Report) - Although a medical doctor in his home country, Nyein pursued additional education in the United States to escape persecution in Burma, now known as Myanmar. He had served five years in prison after joining the democratic revolt as a young doctor. He sought refuge in the U.S. and figured becoming a student was the best way to do that. “Dictatorships neither forgive nor forget their opposition,” Nyein said. “They aren’t agreeable to people leaving, either.” Nyein recently started in his new position as Misericordia University’s dean for adult and continuing education. At 59 years old, he says a philosophy of lifelong learning is what brought him to the Back Mountain institution. It is a philosophy he formed early in his life and he is glad to see others gravitate toward it as well. “I’ve embraced that and it put me on a good path,” said Nyein, who completed his doctorate in health education at the University of Tennessee.

The system of education they are clamouring for is Genuine Education For All (GEFA) which implies education in all its possible ramifications to all segments of the population, and most importantly, as a lifelong process. The arrowhead of GEFA is Professor Pai Obanya, an international education strategist. According to Obanya, the prevailing notion of equating education with schooling leads to the exclusion of a large number of “educables” within a society from benefitting from education and that this narrow conception of education also prevents a government from linking education intimately with other national development sectors, adding that the country is thus unable to harness the education potentials of all sectors of national life, as well as of all social and economic activities of society.

Ode - By Fred De Vries - Oct. 17 (Special Report) - Behind the public library, at the corner of Commissioner and Sauer streets, the problems of Johannesburg--and other cities on the African continent--are sharply defined. Shops are boarded up. An apartment building with broken windows screams urban blight. The residents were evicted several days ago "for hygienic reasons." These newly homeless families have created a kind of campsite on the sidewalk with mattresses and rope. Toddlers crawl through the rubble. Some 30 metres away at No. 54 stands the City and Community Development Association (CIDA) City Campus: a glass-and-steel beacon of hope. It is a business school for South African youth who are on the verge of falling through the cracks. The students, selected based on their school exam results and leadership qualities, can get a degree in business administration for next to nothing, largely funded by sponsor companies and benefactors. After four years of study, the graduates have good prospects of a well-paid job. Sello Kgosimore was one of the first students to graduate from the program. His mother was a cleaning woman for a white family in Johannesburg. He never knew his father. His illiterate grandparents raised him on a farm where they worked as farm labourers. As a youngster, Kgosimore dreamed of going to school, getting a car and buying a house for his mother. But his scholarship applications to universities were repeatedly rejected. "CIDA was my only study option," he remembers, "so it was crucial to me to succeed." With his diploma under his arm, he got a job as an auditor at DaimlerChrysler. Sello Kgosimore is now driving a Mercedes and wearing a tailored suit.

Power Line - By Jeffrey Zaslow - Sep. 21 (News Report) - Randy Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon University computer-science professor, was about to give a lecture Tuesday afternoon, but before he said a word, he received a standing ovation from 400 students and colleagues. He motioned to them to sit down. "Make me earn it," he said. They had come to see him give what was billed as his "last lecture." This is a common title for talks on college campuses today. Schools such as Stanford and the University of Alabama have mounted "Last Lecture Series," in which top professors are asked to think deeply about what matters to them and to give hypothetical final talks. . ...At Carnegie Mellon, however, Dr. Pausch's speech was more than just an academic exercise. The 46-year-old father of three has pancreatic cancer and expects to live for just a few months. His lecture, using images on a giant screen, turned out to be a rollicking and riveting journey through the lessons of his life.
