These elections were held in a glaring constitutional crisis, with the president, speaker of the house and leading opposition movement all stating they did not recognize the validity of the vote. So it is not clear if the winners will be able to take their seats in Parliament. The election campaign in the Metn region, which was the most significant, was shockingly devoid of serious discussion of policy issues, or the provision of studied proposals on how Lebanon can tackle its pressing national challenges in the fields of economy, education, youth, environment and security. Rebuilding the country was not high on the priority list of candidates' proposals, and thus the elections will not advance the cause of national reconciliation and political reconstruction that is so critical for all Lebanese.
