The Guardian - By Nick Davies - Oct. 12 (News) - One of Rupert Murdoch's most senior European executives has resigned following Guardian inquiries about a circulation scam at News Corporation's flagship newspaper, the Wall Street Journal. The Guardian found evidence that the Journal had been channelling money through European companies in order to secretly buy thousands of copies of its own paper at a knock-down rate, misleading readers and advertisers about the Journal's true circulation.

The Guardian - By Jemima Kiss - Aug. 08 (Special Report) - In a revealing glimpse inside the Wikipedia kimono at its annual conference in Haifa at the weekend, co-founder Jimmy Wales described the typical Wikipedia editor as a 26-year-old geeky male with a PhD. Eventually he'll get married, go on to some other project and leave the site, said Wales. And Wikipedia's own research found that 90% of editors are male. This imbalance has meant that while technology and science are covered comprehensively, other subjects are left wanting. "The main thing is to bring in people of all different backgrounds," Wales told the event, reports the Independent. "If you do that, you increase the knowledge base of the site, which can only be a good thing. At the moment, we are relatively poor in a few areas; for example, biographies of famous women through history and issues surrounding early childcare."

The first, “Ethos,” appeals to the audience with authority and credibility. “Pathos” is an argument that appeals to the audience’s emotions, while “Logos” is the attempt to persuade with logic. With its new marketing campaign designed to promote the newspaper industry at large, the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) managed to leverage all three rhetorical strategies. “The NAA board developed a set of strategies last year,” Mark Contreras, former NAA board chairman, said. “We sent out a survey to all the members of the NAA and asked, ‘What are the two or three issues that newspapers should work on, collectively?’” The responses were painstakingly boiled down to four key industry initiatives, according to Contreras: To better protect intellectual property and better monetize content; to agree upon mobile advertising standards; to provide an industry-wide digital shopping experience, particularly for national advertisers; and to better communicate and promote the full value of the audiences newspapers deliver across all media platforms.

'Three Cups of Tea' author forced to defend against claims he lied

CNN - Apr. 17 (News Report) - Greg Mortenson, the high-profile advocate of girls' education in Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been forced to defend his best-selling book "Three Cups of Tea" against charges that key stories in it are false. Mortenson shot to international fame with the book, which describes his getting lost on an effort to climb the world's second-highest peak, being rescued by Pakistani villagers and vowing to return to build a school for local girls. He also claims to have been captured by the Taliban and held for several days before being released. But another best selling-author, Jon Krakauer of "Into Thin Air" fame, told a "60 Minutes" investigation to be aired Sunday that the story is not true. "It's a beautiful story. And it's a lie," Krakauer is quoted as saying.

Print subscribers would also continue to receive unfettered access at no additional cost. Executives say the time is right, as people have been conditioned by tablets and smart phones to pay for access to content. "We have to be agnostic in regard to how people digest the news product," Janet Robinson, the CEO of The New York Times Co., said in an interview with NPR. "We can't force them to buy a print subscription. We can't force them to buy a digital application. We have to be there in every venue."
