I remember making eye contact with one or the other of the occupants, who both were obviously crying. Then I quickly moved on, not wanting to embarrass them or me. But only a few feet later, I realized that they wouldn't be here — out in the open, in public — if they were embarrassed and that it was mostly me who was embarrassed. My heart just stopped. And I hung my head.

Reuters - By Gregg Easterbrook - Mar. 16 (Opinion) - The situation in Japan is horrific — but because of the earthquake and tsunami, not because of the malfunctioning atomic reactor station. The earthquake and its awful aftermath killed at least thousands of people, perhaps tens of thousands. That is an unspeakable tragedy. The damaged reactors at Fukushima haven’t killed anyone, and while posing a clear danger, especially to workers heroically fighting the malfunction, the odds are that any harm to public health will be minor, if public health is harmed at all.

A similar crisis of confidence hit Japan in the 1990s, after the collapse of the late 1980s bubble. That crisis occurred because the Japanese government hesitated to inject public funds into banks, and instead reacted solely with mistaken demand-side expansion policies. When government action finally came, it was misdirected and too late. It took nine years from the collapse of our bubble until our first public funds injections into banks.
