Baltimore Sun - By Mike Preston, Jamison Hensley, Edward Lee, Ken Murray - Jan. 09 (Opinion) - I always love listening to Ray Lewis talk, even when I think he's going a little overboard, because it's a bit like being a parishioner in the Church of Football. You can't help but smile a little, even if you don't totally buy into what The Preacher is saying, because clearly HE believes in what he's saying. And I find passionate people fascinating. I say all that because when Lewis said earlier this week that the 2010 Ravens remind him a lot of the Ravens in 2000, I sort of rolled my eyes. This team has very little in common with the team in 2000. That team was a special group of players who were motivated not only to win, but to dominate. There are some starters on the 2010 team who might not even crack the special teams line-up on that Super Bowl squad. But today did remind you a little of that old aggressive, bullying style the Ravens used to play. Terrell Suggs was flying around the edge, Lewis was blowing up people after the catch, and Matt Cassel was hit often.

The basis of the suspension is a league rule calling on all players to comport themselves in a respectable manner and so forth. Six weeks is considered pretty harsh. The Independent - Oct. 27 (News Report) - From a towering animated model footballer to cheerleaders posing with Parliamentarians at Westminster, nobody does razzmatazz quite like the National Football League. It has been hard to miss the build-up to tomorrow's American football showdown at Wembley between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants, largely because of the 26ft replica of the Dolphins' Jason Taylor that has been popping up King Kong-like at locations in the London area from Canary Wharf to Bluewater. The occasion marks the first time that a competitive NFL game has been played outside North America and signals that the masters of one of the world's least international major sports are finally serious about branching out beyond their home market. "We want to be a top five sport [in the UK]," says Alistair Kirkwood, managing director of NFL UK. Kirkwood describes London as " the gateway to Europe" and talks about trying to make "a big statement" about the NFL's ambitions, while recognising that other leading sports are doing "incredibly well". He admits, too, to not getting much sleep this week. One of the reasons for American football's comparatively weak international footprint is its immense strength at home. Kirkwood says that a recent match between the Dallas Cowboys and the New England Patriots attracted a television audience of 30 million. This, he says, is 10 million more than any other programme this month. The sport, in particular its seasonal climax, the fabled Super Bowl, enjoys a unique, quasi-religious status in America that it cannot hope to duplicate elsewhere. More toilets are flushed in the US at half-time of this grand finale than in any other period. Not for nothing has the cartoonist Ralph Steadman written of how "an American is born-again in a football stadium ".

It's not proper football is it,'' says the gentleman guiding our small taxi Friday from the Dolphins' team hotel on glamorous Park Lane, past the Aston Martin dealership. ``It's all double-dutch to us. We don't understand the rules at all.'' The driver had only a vague awareness there was an American football game happening here Sunday. Couldn't be sure it was the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants. Didn't know it was at Wembley Stadium. In this city of some 11 million people, he wasn't alone. You mention Sunday's big football game around here and Londoners assume you mean Arsenal vs. Liverpool in a highly anticipated Premier League soccer match. There is arrogance at once bravely admirable and faintly galling in the NFL's notion it can package itself for export to a waiting, hungry world -- that it can parachute one of its midseason games into a diverse, cosmopolitan capital like this one and expect the populace to curtsy and swoon. There is some of that going on here, yes. Wembley's nearly 90,000 seats sold out quickly for this first-ever NFL regular season game staged overseas. The circus has come to town, and curiosity over the unique, highly marketed visit of this major American sports brand is augmented by a hard-core minority of Brits who do follow the stateside version of football. But to say this game has gripped Great Britain on account of Dolphins-Giants would be roughly akin to saying soccer captivated America once David Beckham touched down.

Nineteen years after Doug Williams of the Washington Redskins became the first black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl, Super Bowl XLI will be the first with not just one, but two black coaches, Indianapolis' Tony Dungy and Chicago's Lovie Smith. The most-watched television program of the year -- more than 140 million viewers tuned in last Feburary -- also pits the NFL's most prolific quarterback, two-time MVP Peyton Manning of the Colts, against perhaps its most dominant defender, Bears All-Pro middle linebacker Brian Urlacher. Those stars and their teammates might face some slippery conditions as showers are in the forecast.
