AlterNet - By Amanda Marcotte - May. 06 (News Analysis) - Republicans lost the first battle in their newly invigorated war on contraception and other health services for sexually active people, such as STD testing and treatment, when the Democrats called their bluff in the federal budget standoff. Planned Parenthood avoided the ax, but that doesn’t mean that Republicans are prepared to give up on doing everything in their power to separate women, especially low-income women, from access to contraception services. In lieu of cutting family planning subsidies on the federal level, Republicans have devised a plan to cut them on the state level, where they face fewer meddling pro-choice Democrats.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.0 average - 6 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

In a recent op/ed column, Scaife broke with House Republicans over their resolution to de-fund Planned Parenthood and the entire Title X family planning program, Scot Kersgaard reports in the Minnesota Independent.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.4 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

And more power to the protesters! But Egypt’s problems run much deeper than its autocratic regime, and one of its biggest problems is unsustainable population growth. Here’s a 2009 Al Jazeera report on population pressures in Egypt: The country’s populace has soared from 44 million when Mubarak took power in 1981 to more than 80 million today, making Egypt by far the most populous country in the Middle East and the Arab world. And Egyptians are densely concentrated, living in a narrow band along the Nile, as the rest of the country is dry and largely uninhabitable. If Egypt’s current growth rate continues, its population could hit 160 million by 2050 . The Mubarak regime has promoted birth control and smaller families , and helped to slow the birthrate. In 1981, the average woman had more than five children ; now that figure ...
NewsTrust Rating: Not rated yet - See Info » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

365Gay.com - May. 01 (News Report) - Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) is expected to sign legislation that would require school districts to prohibit bullying and harassment.

The Senate passed the bill unanimously on Wednesday. It already had passed the House.

Crist has said he would likely sign the bill. ''I'm against bullying, too,'' he said.

The legislation mandates that school districts throughout the state must put in place specific policies to deal with bullying that includes methods of investigating and punishments. It also bans cyber bullying.

The districts would have to comply by December 1 or risk losing state funds.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.1 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Cato Unbound - By Betsey Stevenson, Justin Wolfers - Jan. 21 (Special Report) - So what drives modern marriage? We believe that the answer lies in a shift from the family as a forum for shared production, to shared consumption. In case the language of economic lacks romance, let's be clearer: modern marriage is about love and companionship. Most things in life are simply better shared with another person: this ranges from the simple pleasures such as enjoying a movie or a hobby together, to shared social ties such as attending the same church, and finally, to the joint project of bringing up children. Returning to the language of economics, the key today is consumption complementarities-activities that are not only enjoyable, but are more enjoyable when shared with a spouse. We call this new model of sharing our lives "hedonic marriage".
NewsTrust Rating: 3.1 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Associated Content - By Denise Grier - Dec. 18 (Other) - He lost his way. My fisherman boy, my blues guitarist, my beautiful son was blinded by the city lights. He traveled the world, saw the castles of Germany, stood in the vineyards of Italy. He knew romantic love and fathered children. His love for his children was deeper than the ocean. But like so many others in these times of push and shove living, these gifts he took for granted. He needed to be more, to see more-to do more. Unfortunately he was to learn that all the time he was searching, the home he was looking for was inside his heart. By the time he discovered this, the damage had been done. He became a victim of his own disillusionment, filled with sadness and regret. He struggled to rise above his pain. This struggle is reflected in his poetry, and in the lonesome songs he played on his guitar.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
