Washington Post - By Ruth Marcus - Feb. 25 (Opinion) - Mike Huckabee made a great argument for gay marriage.

The once and perhaps future Republican presidential candidate didn't mean it that way, of course. Actually, he was slamming President Obama's decision to stop defending the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.0 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Washington Post - By Kerry Eleveld - Jan. 21 (Interview) - Less than a month after President Obama repealed "don't ask, don't tell," his Justice Department filed its latest brief defending the so-called Defense of Marriage Act - the law that makes gay Americans second-class citizens by outlawing federal recognition of their legal marriages.

This action underscores the point that the battle over gay rights is just beginning.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.0 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

CNN - Dec. 16 (Opinion) - Over the past 40 years, marriage has foundered among the poor, with the nation's attention especially focused on the decline of marriage in poor black communities. But an important new report finds that "the retreat from marriage has now clearly moved into the precincts of [both] black and white Middle America."
NewsTrust Rating: 4.4 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

But it wasn't always that way. Once, a young Mexican postman of limited means could take his girlfriend on a trolley across the border for a strawberry soda. Or he could walk to the El Paso train station with his wife and begin an American family, entering a country where no one yet thought of building walls to keep people out.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.9 average - 5 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Thrasher - Apr. 09 (Opinion) - In 1958, when my mother, who was white, and father, who was black, wanted to get married in Nebraska, it was illegal for them to wed. So they decided to go next door to Iowa, a state that was progressive enough to allow interracial marriage. My mom’s brother tried to have the Nebraska state police bar her from leaving the state so she couldn’t marry my dad, which was only the latest legal indignity she had endured. She had been arrested on my parents’ first date, accused of prostitution. (The conventional thought of the time being: Why else would a white woman be seen with a black man?)
NewsTrust Rating: 4.4 average - 8 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The Root - By Chandra R. Thomas - Feb. 25 (Opinion) - There is admittedly a Girls Gone Wild element to Mardi Gras. You know, the intoxicated young women raising their shirts for beads and engaging in salacious sexual activity on the streets. That may be so for many tourists, but for natives like my family, Mardi Gras is a family-bonding time: cooking out and dancing to the bands marching by, all the while screaming for the beads and other trinkets thrown from the vibrantly decorated floats. I have never once seen anyone in my family flash their assets, to claim worthless, plastic jewelry.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Love, sex and the changing landscape of infidelity

International Herald Tribune - By Tara Parker-Pope - Oct. 28 (Review) - If you cheated on your spouse, would you admit it to a researcher?

That question is one of the biggest challenges in the scientific study of marriage, and it helps explain why different studies produce different estimates of infidelity rates in the United States.

Surveys conducted in person are likely to underestimate the real rate of adultery, because people are reluctant to admit such behavior not just to their spouses but to anyone.

In a study published last summer in The Journal of Family Psychology, for example, researchers from the University of Colorado and Texas A&M surveyed 4,884 married women, using face-to-face interviews and anonymous computer questionnaires. In the interviews, only 1 percent of women said they had been unfaithful to their husbands in the past year; on the computer questionnaire, more than 6 percent did.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Will he boost U.S. global family-planning funding to the $1 billion a year that advocates propose, working with other nations to make family planning and modern conception services globally available?

The issue's not just moral: In an environmentally imperiled world, it's strategic and critical.

John McCain's anti-abortion, anti-birth-control-assistance record is unequivocal. So is Barack Obama's diametrically opposed position: in favor of activist government support for family planning, domestically and internationally.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.3 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Newsday - By Stephanie Coontz - Mar. 14 (Opinion) - Americans today are far less tolerant of male adultery than in the past, and the public is unwilling to even consider forgiving a male politician unless his wife first shows that she forgives him. But even a wife's saintly support no longer works very well to get an errant politician off the hook.

The guys keep trying, though, because the American public doesn't seem ready to accept the messy realities of a real marriage between two partners who are - for better and for worse - equally apt to require forgiveness and equally free to bestow or withhold it.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.9 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Marriage isn't the half of it

Los Angeles Times - By Nancy D. Polikoff - Mar. 06 (Opinion) - Unmarried couples of any sexual orientation, single parents and their children, extended families -- and really, anyone who forms relationships of economic and emotional interdependence that aren't marriage -- deserve laws that value their needs and commitments. Early gay-rights advocates were part of a chorus of voices that supported diverse family structures. This week's push for equality in access to marriage should not make us complacent about the importance of just family policies for all.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.3 average - 10 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

What a little bird told us

Los Angeles Times - By Jonathan Rosen - Feb. 24 (Opinion) - Another lesson is that birds need protection from our sentimental urge to see them as simple creatures that can be "saved" without a radical change in our thinking about the world. Saving birds means nothing if we don't re-create an environment for them to live in. Birds are not dangerous, like tigers -- unless, of course, bird flu becomes a threat -- but they are wild, and they live inside an infinitely complex web of complementary dependencies.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
