Report: Thousands of U.S.-Born Kids Languish in Foster Care As Immigrant Parents Detained, Deported

Democracy Now - By Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzalez - Nov. 10 (Special Report) - A new report looks at how thousands of U.S.-born children are being sent to foster care when their non-U.S. citizen parents are detained or deported. The Applied Research Center investigation, "Shattered Families: The Perilous Intersection of Immigration Enforcement and the Child Welfare System,” finds there are at least 5,100 children currently living in foster care — who are prevented from uniting with their detained or deported parents. If nothing changes, researchers found some 15,000 more children may end up in foster care in the next five years. We speak with Seth Freed Wessler, the principal investigator of the report. We go to Tokyo for an update from Thomas Breuer, head of the Climate and Energy Unit for Greenpeace Germany and part of a field of radiation monitors in Japan. He notes that unlike Chernobyl, the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is in a densely populated area. “We warned the government that there are a lot of cities and villages outside the 20-kilometers evacuation zone where the radiation levels are so high that people need urgently to be evacuated, especially children and pregnant women, because they are the most vulnerable part of the population to radiation,” says Breuer. Boulder Catholic School Kicked Out Because His Parents Are Gay

The child will not be allowed to re-enroll next year at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School. The Denver Archdiocese posted a statement Friday that the parents are "living in open discord with Catholic teaching." The statement says students in Catholic schools are expected to have parents who abide by policies of the school and church.

Under the proposed stimulus package, the Berkeley Unified School District is set to receive a little over $4 million over the next two years in combined construction, special education and Title I funding increases, with $2.5 million allocated for 2009-10 and the remaining assigned for the next fiscal year... Food or education After graduation Huong found herself inspired by the plight of the province’s Ma Lieng ethnic people, who live in poor conditions in a remote area of the province. These children are often unable to take advantage of educational opportunities, since they are needed at home to help their parents work or take care of their younger siblings. "When I saw the city children going to school, I often wondered why Ma Lieng children didn’t have that opportunity," Huong says, "I began to ponder this question and instead of applying for a job in the centre of the province, I decided to become a teacher in Rao Tre Village." The Huong Lien kindergarten was founded by Headmistress Tran Thi Linh. Hoping to bring education to the most remote areas of the province, she gathered a group of teachers who shared this dream and opened the school in 1995.
