Wall Street Journal - By Sarah Mcbride, Yukari Iwatani Kane - Feb. 19 (News Report) - After a years-long heated battle between HD DVD and Blu-ray, Blu-ray began rapidly pulling away in recent weeks. The biggest momentum switch came in early January, when Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros., which had been backing both formats, said that after May, it would publish high-definition titles only on Blu-ray. Since then, retailers from Best Buy Co. to Wal-Mart Stores Inc. have said they would throw their weight exclusively behind the Sony-backed technology.

Hacker Cracks High-Def DVD Encryption System

Yahoo! News - By David Garrett - Dec. 30 (News Report) - Muslix64's hack is reportedly designed to enable users to copy high-definition films in Toshiba's HD-DVD and Sony's Blu-ray format. Whether or not it works has yet to be confirmed, but Muslix64 supplied his own bit of compelling proof: a brief YouTube movie in which he showed, in careful, step-by-step sequence, exactly how a high-def DVD of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket could be decrypted, copied to a hard drive, then played.

High-definition DVD market facing static

Reuters - By Sue Zeidler - Aug. 31 (News Report) - Hollywood is hoping high-definition DVDs will reignite a slowing market for movies at home, but they have drawn mixed reviews from retailers and analysts due to technical issues and a bitter format war. The competing formats, Sony Corp.-backed Blu-ray and Toshiba Corp.-championed HD-DVD, aim to provide better picture quality and interactive features, but some early viewers have been underwhelmed. "Neither format is selling well or at the level I had expected. I had expected early adopters to step up and other retailers have had the same experience," said Bjorn Dybdahl, president of San Antonio, Texas-based specialty store Bjorn's. One format is expected to win, just as VHS ultimately triumphed over Betamax in the video standards war. Blu-ray was tapped by many experts prior to launch as the likely victor due to its heavier studio support.
