Democracy Now - By mail@democracynow.org (Democracy Now!) - Nov. 30 - In a national broadcast exclusive interview, we speak with world-renowned political dissident and linguist Noam Chomsky about the release of more than 250,000 secret U.S. State Department cables by WikiLeaks. In 1971, Chomsky helped government whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg release the Pentagon Papers, a top-secret internal U.S. account of the Vietnam War. Commenting on the revelations that several Arab leaders are urging the United States to attack Iran, Chomsky says, "[latest polls show] Arab opinion holds that the major threat in the region is Israel, that's 80 percent; the second threat is the United States, that's 77 percent. Iran is listed as a threat by 10 percent," Chomsky says. "This may not be reported in the newspapers, but it's certainly familiar to the Israeli and U.S. governments and the ambassadors. What this reveals is the profound hatred for democracy on the part of our political leadership."

Washington Examiner - Nov. 10 (Editorial) - The seeming inability of unnamed Illinois officials to complete "paperwork" as required by law in a timely manner contrasts mightily with West Virginia and Delaware, where no such delays will delay seating Joe Manchin and Chris Coons, respectively, who will take office on the first day of the lame duck session. That both are Democrats replacing Democrats and thus won't change the Senate's partisan balance of power is probably not coincidental.

For to cater to the Republicans, the President had to abandon his progressive base, the 30 percent of the voters who were his most stalwart supporters. No doubt the political rationale for this was the dubious premise that these progressives had nowhere else to go and so would vote for him come what may. This turned out to be a serious misjudgment, for there was enough progressive disgust with Obama on Nov. 2 to drive some of them to the Green Party and cause others to just stay home. So you see, there is always somewhere else to go.

John Boehner, Haley Barbour and Mitch McConnell held forth, and if they mentioned "The American People" once, they mentioned them sixteen thousand two hundred and forty four times! They shoved "The American People," almost literally, into every other sentence. All they did to win in this election was listen to "The American People." "The American People" affirmed their Republican positions because the Republicans understood "The American People;" and "The American People" understood that they understood "The American People." And on and on and on and on.
