National Journal - By Ronald Brownstein - May. 26 (News Analysis) - The new round of national and state surveys this week generally showing President Obama clinging to a tenuous advantage over Republican Mitt Romney reinforce the conclusion that socially liberal, upscale white women may stand as the president's indispensable line of defense in his struggle for reelection.

Both the national ABC/Washington Post survey released earlier this week, and the NBC/Marist Polls released Thursday in the battleground states of Ohio, Virginia and Florida show Obama retaining preponderant support among minority voters who were critical to his 2008 victory. Conversely, in almost all of the surveys, Obama faces a consistent pattern of erosion from his already meager 2008 levels of support among whites without a college education.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The High Cost of Low Teacher Salaries

New York Times - By Dave Eggers, NÍnive Clements Calegari - May. 01 (Opinion) - When we don’t get the results we want in our military endeavors, we don’t blame the soldiers. We don’t say, “It’s these lazy soldiers and their bloated benefits plans! That’s why we haven’t done better in Afghanistan!” No, if the results aren’t there, we blame the planners. We blame the generals, the secretary of defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff. No one contemplates blaming the men and women fighting every day in the trenches for little pay and scant recognition.

And yet in education we do just that. When we don’t like the way our students score on international standardized tests, we blame the teachers. When we don’t like the way particular schools perform, we blame the teachers and restrict their resources.

Compare this with our approach to our military: when results on the ground are not what we hoped, we think of ways to better support soldiers. We try to give them better tools, better weapons, better protection, better training. And when recruiting is down, we offer incentives.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.2 average - 9 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Minding the Campus - By Mary Grabar - Apr. 22 (Opinion) - After spending four depressing days this month at a meeting of 3,000 writing teachers in Atlanta, I can tell you that their parent group, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, is not really interested in teaching students to write and communicate clearly. The group’s agenda, clear to me after sampling as many of the meeting’s 500 panels as I could, is devoted to disparaging grammar, logic, reason, evidence and fairness as instruments of white oppression. They believe rules of grammar discriminate against “marginalized” groups and restrict self-expression.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The Guardian - By Barbara Ellen - Dec. 19 (Opinion) - This is a covert nobbling of poorer students ill-versed in the dark art of "admissions freemasonry" Never mind Santa, a new class divide rule has come to town. Forget all that complicated stuff about poverty, housing et al, this one is a simple education question: "Could you tell a 14-year-old which subjects are required at GCSE and A-level to take them all the way to study at a top university, such as one in the Russell Group?" If you think you could do this, and I'm sure the majority of you can, then you are probably middle class. Or it could be that you are not quite sure. Maybe even some of you, or your children, are currently applying for a course at a top university and have already proudly scribbled down A-levels in, say, law, art & design, or business studies. Which tells me, my sweets, that not only are you most probably either working class, or lower middle class, you are also almost definitely screwed.
