Informed Comment - Jul. 23 (Opinion) - That the horrible terrorist attacks in Oslo on Friday that left some 90 persons or more dead– a bombing of the prime minister’s office and shootings at a Labor Party youth camp– were allegedly committed by a blonde, far right wing Norwegian fundamentalist Christian rather than by a radical Muslim group is being treated as a matter of surprise in some quarters. But if those journalists and analysts had been paying attention, they would not be surprised at all.

I find the secular claim that organizing through churches is somehow a Constitutional issue to be odd. I engage in political activity through secular organizations and a church. None of it seems inappropriate in a democracy. Church/state separation is a concept involving government policy.

Aid organizations have seen a fifteen percent increase in the last year and a half in the Iraqi Christians fleeing to Lebanon. The Patriarch of Iraq's Chaldean recently fled Iraq to Lebanon because he was threatened. The Chaldean Bishop in Lebanon is adamant that Christians should not be resettled. He claims that twenty years ago there were eight hundred thousand Chaldeans in Iraq and now that number has been halved. The Bishop of Basra left for Australia because all his parish had fled.

Professor Bainbridge - Sep. 14 (Opinion) - Pope Benedict XVI's speech at the University of Regensburg is a challenging read - it's dense and, in a way, highly technical. Yet, it rewards close scrutiny. The simplistic view is to focus on the portion of the speech in which the Pope quotes Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus' comment that "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." Predictably, certain Muslims leaders are whipping up outrage over the quotation (the same ones who whipped up the outrage over the Danish cartoons?).
