Oakland Local - By Patsy K. Eagan - Sep. 14 (News Report) - One week after Burning Man, a steady stream of dirty cars still flow into the San Francisco Bay Area. A 1980s Toyota Camry pulled into a smog test center downtown on Saturday with unmistakable layers of playa dust. To the uninitiated, it’s sign of a Labor Day party gone too long. This is the time of year when Burners return in a unified “walk of shame” covered in yellow silt. This burner – a Black Rock City greeter who preferred to remain anonymous – wanted the test certification so she could sell the vehicle. “I’m amazed this car made it there and back,” she said. She also confirmed that by the time the last bit of rebar unhinged Black Rock City, the Department of Public Works had begun the clean-up phase. A record number of 50,504 citizens camped, danced and explored more than five square miles of prehistoric lakebed. Surrounded by mountains, the Black Rock desert spans roughly 420 square miles and borders the Paiute Indian Reservation. Its seductively soft, alkaline sand must contain no trace by early October. Then the federal Bureau of Land Management inspects the site for permit compliance and the last burner leaves. Feathers, bikes and cigarette butts … this is the carbon footprint left behind.

Houses used as tools to teach efficiency

Advocate News - By Chad Calder - Jun. 10 (News) - Three demonstration houses that are being built in Gonzales will be used this fall to teach homebuilders, architects, code enforcers and real estate agents about energy-efficient houses. Roy Domingue, owner of Wooden Creations Homes, is building the houses on La. 941 to act as field classrooms on energy and resource efficiency for 12 months beginning in September. Domingue said “Going Up, Going Green” has its roots in the effort to come up with standards for raised-pier houses in the International Residential Code.

This we learned in Germany recently, on a fascinating tour of green building and design there, organized by the Ecologic Institute environmental think tank with funding from the German government. The Passivhaus standard is so stringent, in pure performance terms, that it sometimes leads to dramatic, paradigm-shifting outcomes. An exciting example of this, which we observed in action, is a Passivhaus school on the outskirts of Frankfurt, the Grundschule Riedberg, designed by 4a Architekten GmbH. This school is so tight and effectively insulated that a classroom in use is typically warmed simply by the heat of the students inside.

Behind chain-link and barbed-wire fencing, rusted pipes snake over grass-studded railroad tracks, connecting old warehouses and corroded storage units that once held chemicals. A few minutes after 8, architect Dan Rockhill, the director of Studio 804, pulls in and parks his truck inches from the "No Trespassing" sign posted on the front gate. "This is a toxic site," Rockhill warns as his class — graduate students in the University of Kansas' School of Architecture, Design and Planning — gathers in front of a rickety warehouse. "In fact, some of you are glowing." They follow him inside. The place is a dump. He points to the bent lid of a refrigerator-sized toolbox. "A lot of crackheads and meth addicts come through here," he says, adding theft to a list of hazards and hardships endured by past Studio 804 students.

No connection beyond a national affiliation. Deb Cinamon Whalen of East Kingston, like many of her fellow New Hampshire-ites, held that view -- if she ever gave it any thought at all. But since becoming aware there's a grave thread between them, Whalen has become a connection between the states and is trying to forge an ever-greater awareness of how the two are tied together. "It's coal," she says. "Mountain Top Removal." Her interest and concern led her to Larry Gibson, a West Virginian environmental activist who has made it his calling to enlighten those outside Kayford Mountain home that we're in this together. Whalen has helped arrange a number of events featuring Gibson, here to shed light on a dark subject. "Most of us don't think we use coal. ...; But we use it for our electricity here in New Hampshire." Much of it comes directly from Mountain Top Removal (MTR), she says.

Beijing Olympics Promote Lost Arts in China

New America Media - By Jun Wang - Jul. 25 (News Report) - What will be presented at the Olympics opening ceremony has been kept under wraps in China, but U.S. scholars and students revealed that folk art will be performed in the most-looked-forward-to event ever in that country. Blair Remington, a junior art major at the University of Central Florida (UCF) told New America Media that yo-yo and bow-and-arrow performances will be showcased at the Olympics opening ceremony. Peking opera masks will also be on display. "I'm looking forward to seeing them on TV," she said. Remington, on her trip to China in May, learned this from artists who told her they would be performing. She went there last May with a student team from UCF and the University of Oregon (UO) to cover and do research on Chinese folk arts.

Prospect - Jan. 07 (Special Report) - Overrated Hollywood movies. US ticket sales recovered this year, but to what end? This was a year for microculture, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The bigger visual productions of the year won't much stand the test of time. On the bright side, television drama continues to rise in quality. Underrated The iPhone. The world really did change on 29th June 2007. We now have handheld personal computers and personal entertainment centres, yet they are no larger than a thin pack of cards. And no, I'm not a techie, a gadget freak or an Apple lover. The device itself is beautiful as well.
