The American Conservative - By Jack Hunter - Jan. 18 (Opinion) - Obama and Palin represent opposing versions of the same identity politics. Based primarily on personality, love, or hatred for the other, it is politics driven primarily by emotion–not logic. If you don’t believe me, try telling an Obama-loving Democrat that he is no different from a Palin-loving Republican or vice versa. Even the soundest reasoning will do little to quell the forthcoming rage.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.1 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Toxic right-wing vitriol so dominated the public airwaves from the McCarthy era until 1963 that President Kennedy, that year, launched a citizen's campaign to enforce the Fairness Doctrine, which required accuracy and balance in the broadcast media.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 10 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Clarke Romans - Jan. 11 (Interview) - While federal investigators and the news media try to uncover the motivation behind Saturday’s shooting rampage in Tucson, the picture emerging of the accused gunman, Jared Lee Loughner, is of a severely disturbed 22-year-old. Loughner’s apparent mental health problems have shone a spotlight on issues surrounding mental health treatment in Arizona, which made drastic budget cuts to behavioral health services in 2010.
Max Blumenthal - By Max Blumenthal - Jan. 08 (Opinion) - John Roll, the Chief Justice for the US District Court in Arizona, was among those killed this afternoon at a town hall with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. In February 2009, I testified as a prosecution witness in Roll’s courtroom in Tucson in a politically charged civil trial known as Vicente v. Barnett. I did not know at the time that Roll was living under a 24/7 protective detail because of hundreds of threats against him and his family as well as inflammatory rhetoric directed against him by right-wing elements.
NewsTrust Rating: Not rated yet - See Info » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Some 14 years ago, I wrote a column that called the approach “barbarism as a public relations strategy.” It is a manipulative, authoritarian, all but fact-independent form of politics-as-public-theater that uses simple, media-friendly publicity stunts and harsh rhetoric to prey on the fears of unsophisticated voters, making society’s least powerful and most vulnerable into scapegoats and boogeymen who are unworthy of being treated as Americans or, even, human beings. When I first wrote about this kind of politics in the mid-1990s, it was being practiced by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who’d honed it in a series of PR initiatives relating to his notorious jail, where conditions were so inhumane as to draw the interest of Amnesty International and the U.S. Justice Department.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 6 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Our experiences administering the nation’s immigration system, under Republican and Democratic presidents, have convinced us that the challenge to Arizona’s statute is essential to clarify, once again, who in our federal system has responsibility for setting immigration policy.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.5 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Local municipalities in these sanctuary cities prevent their officials from reporting illegals—even those with criminal records—to Immigrations and Customs enforcement (ICE), and it is costing American lives.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.0 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

New Immigration Law and 'The Gangs of Arizona'

CNBC.com - By Kenneth W. Gronbach - Jul. 23 (Opinion) - The Gangs of New York, a movie set in Manhattan in the 1860s, dealt with the violent conflict between different immigrant factions. The plot was simple: Basically, the last immigrants off the boats were at the bottom of the food chain and made to feel very unwelcome by the “real” Americans, who had arrived years earlier from different European countries.

Ethnic gangs fought bloody turf wars in a futile effort to maintain or gain dominance. The irony, of course, is the fact that over time, these ethnic factions intermarried and melted into the fabric of our great American immigrant-based culture.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.4 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

American Prospect - By Gabriel Arana - Jul. 22 (Opinion) - In short, whether or not SB 1070 goes into effect next week, no one's going to be happy. Putting off comprehensive immigration reform has exacerbated existing tensions and led to radical solutions like the Arizona law. Had Obama been able to push immigration reform through in his first year, a bill like SB 1070 would have been impossible; if you provide a path to citizenship for the 12 million immigrants currently living in the country, a law targeting the undocumented will not accomplish much. The Justice Department's lawsuit against Arizona is the administration cleaning up its own mess.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 8 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Jan Brewer’s claims about illegal immigrants and violent crime have been pretty thoroughly debunked, but pro-reform non-profit America’s Voice takes it one step further, circulating a graph today indicating that Arizona’s SB 1070 could actually increase crime in the state. The graph shows rates of violent crime in Arizona jurisdictions [...]
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Texas Monthly - By Paul Burka - Jul. 13 (Opinion) - Is DOJ right? Does the Constitution preempt the states from taking action against illegal immigration?
The word “immigration” does not appear in the Constitution. The closest reference occurs in Article I, Section 8. Among the powers granted to Congress is: “To establish a uniform rule of naturalization….” The word “uniform” is the strongest argument for the government’s claim of preemption. The Constitution also authorizes the federal government to “regulate commerce with foreign nations.”
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 5 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Harper's - By Ken Silverstein - Jul. 10 (Opinion) - The general unsightliness of the capitol makes it a fitting home for today’s Arizona legislature, which is composed almost entirely of dimwits, racists, and cranks. Collectively they have bankrupted the state through a combination of ideological fanaticism on the Republican right and acquiescence and timidity on the part of G.O.P. moderates and Democrats. Although dozens of states are facing budget crises, the situation in Arizona is arguably the nation’s worst, graver even than in California.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 13 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
