Boston Globe - By Joan Vennochi - May. 15 (Opinion) - Republican Scott Brown came out of nowhere in 2010 to win the US Senate seat held by Ted Kennedy for decades. A Democrat who comes out of nowhere could win it back in 2012. But the anti-Brown attack ad launched recently by the League of Women Voters isn’t going to help. It may thrill the liberal base, but it also threatens to chill the independent swing vote that both a Republican and a Democratic candidate need to win in Massachusetts. Why is Brown drawing attention to the League’s ad a full 18 months before election day? Not because it hurts him, but because it helps him. It reminds people of the unflattering “League of Women Vultures’’ moniker that detractors like to use to describe the organization. And, its depiction of a coughing, rasping child who is suffering because of Brown’s vote against air pollution standards illustrates the same old stereotypical scare tactics that turn off voters of all ideological persuasions.

Paterson’s naming of Richard Ravitch as the state’s lieutenant governor was plunged into legal turmoil on Thursday after Senate Republicans received a temporary restraining order that sought to prevent Mr. Ravitch from taking office. The Republicans got the restraining order from a judge in Nassau County just before Midnight Wednesday. Paterson administration officials, however, had already rushed to swear in Mr. Ravitch at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and said Thursday morning that they expected him to preside over the State Senate session later in the afternoon.

Paterson said Mr. Ravitch, 76, would bring stability to the capital and help him end what he called the “crisis in governance” that for more than a month has paralyzed the Senate during its 31-to-31 split. The governor wants Mr. Ravitch to preside over the Senate, cast tie-breaking votes on leadership and other procedural votes and succeed him should Mr. Paterson be unable to serve.

IraqSlogger - Apr. 23 (News Report) - Confusion persists over whether or not the US military will continue with its plan to build barriers around a Sunni enclave in Baghdad, though Ambassador Ryan Crocker said Monday, "Obviously we will respect the wishes of the government and the prime minister," regarding the Adhamiya wall. Nuri al-Maliki demanded on Sunday that construction of the wall be halted. "I oppose the building of the walls, and the construction will stop," he said during a visit to Egypt yesterday, adding, "There are other methods to protect neighborhoods." However, Iraq's chief military spokesman, Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, seemed to contradict Maliki's position in a press conference Monday morning. "We will continue to construct the security barriers in the Adamiyah neighborhood. This is a technical issue,'' Brig. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi said. "Setting up barriers is one thing and building barriers is another. These are moveable barriers that can be removed.''

George Pataki's 12 years in office, claims of Republican cronyism and industrial favoritism ran rampant. But in tapping (Pete) Grannis, who has spent the last three decades in the state Assembly representing the Upper East Side of Manhattan and Roosevelt Island, environmental advocates say Spitzer appears committed to reform. The appointment "reaffirms that this governor may prove to be one of the best environmental governors in New York history," said Alex Matthiessen, director of Tarrytown-based Riverkeeper. "Certainly, time will tell. But this is an encouraging start."
