Times Herald-Record, Hudson Valley - By Greg Bruno - Jan. 27 (Press Release) - For years, environmental watchdogs in New York have been at odds with the state's top environmental agency. During Gov. George Pataki's 12 years in office, claims of Republican cronyism and industrial favoritism ran rampant. But in tapping (Pete) Grannis, who has spent the last three decades in the state Assembly representing the Upper East Side of Manhattan and Roosevelt Island, environmental advocates say Spitzer appears committed to reform. The appointment "reaffirms that this governor may prove to be one of the best environmental governors in New York history," said Alex Matthiessen, director of Tarrytown-based Riverkeeper. "Certainly, time will tell. But this is an encouraging start."
