Straightforward story on the "song and dance" in Washington, D.C. - how things are done, inch by inch. Lists all the "serious" initiatives that might be considered for incorporation in a must-pass Defense authorization bill. Includes "stalking horses" which stand no chance of being passed but might stake out more "moderate" possibilities. The problem is, this war is not an issue that will be solved by a compromise solution - either we pull out or we don't, it's like being halfway pregnant. What we are likely to see is a partial pullback of American troops to bases outside Iraq, strengthening of bases inside Iraq, and continued U.S. bombing campaigns and perhaps intermittent "anti-terrorist" strikes, something like what Israel is doing to the West Bank and Gaza.
