When Does a Massacre Matter?

The Associated Press--and to a lesser extent, Reuters, and a small independent Iraqi news agency--ran stories claiming that 20 decapitated bodies had been found on or near the banks of the Tigris River in Um al-Abeed, a village near Salman Pak, southeast of Baghdad, with sectarian violence strongly implicated.

There were no named sources from this story from any media outlet, and the two anonymous Iraq police officers cited in the widely-carried ... Full Story »

Getting accurate stories from indiginous stringers because americanesque reporters would be slaughtered presents the high possibility of fake news. A qualifier upon news reports might be good. The writer implies intentional guilt, which may be pushing the envelope. Where does he get his better information? Anywhere outside the green zone and inside Iraq?

This is an indictment from a source with an apparent agenda. It makes me want to know more, but doesn't convince me that the information provided is from a fair and balanced source.

Someone else asking why our MSM ignores the massacre by Al Qaeda, but continues to print incorrect (and easily debunked) stories damning our troops. This isn't really a story, and is only noteworthy by the silence of the response from the MSM on this issue.

I have read this site for some time, and in comparing it with many different sources, I have found it to be more accurate than not...however, the real story here is that the AP and the MSM still prefer to not deal with their mistakes, and especially have a profound bias against citizen journalists...instead of doing the kind of investigative journalism I was trained so long ago to do...but rather than try to investigate, the AP stays within its comfortable boundaries...Michael Yon has been in Iraq for years, and has proved his reliability...but not to "professional" reporters. Even if the AP and MSM did not believe Yon...why didn't they try to find out the truth themselves?

Confederate Yankee takes the AP to task for running a false story about an American atrocity and failing to do a story on a well documented Al Queda atrocity. By the way, if you want to know what is happening in Iraq, you gotta read Michael Yon's stuff.

A blog post of a letter that asks for accountability from the Associated Press which reported, but did not disclaim a false story, then did not report a similar and apparently well sourced incident. Seems to be a taking to task, but not strictly speaking journalism.
