Mitterrand's role revealed in Rwandan genocide warning

"Massacres on an ethnic basis were going on and we have evidence that France knew this from at least January 1993. The French military executed the orders of French politicians. The motivation was an obsession with the idea of an Anglo-Saxon plot to oust France from the region." Full Story »

I would like to see the original documents printed in Le Monde and only referenced here -- as well as other independent voices. But the main charge is this report is startling and well worth further digging.

All sources are named, which is nice. Declassified French documents are made reference to, and readers are pointed where to go for further investigation. The larger point--that the French foreign policy at the time of the Rwandan genocide was concerned with rising Anglo-Saxon rather than genocide--is well taken. It is also relevant to today's events, as much ink has been spilled over European objections to our foreign policy, with the assumption made in many cases that the critiques are based on humanitarian concerns. That is a dubious assumption, and stories like this make it apparent why that is so.

in the words of Claude Rains in Casablanca, "I am shocked..." Sadly this is a very clear and well done story about the continuing French attitude of "do as I say, not as I do". Well sourced, well done...I am always amazed that the French get away with their hypocracy, while damning us. Oh, and is anyone who keeps their eye on current events who is surprised by this?

Shocking accusation that Mitterand supported the Hutu led massacre in Ruwanda for parochial political reasons.

Interesting report on France's alleged involvement in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The report relies largely on recently declassified documents released by Le Monde, and one french lawyer's account. Before forming an opinion about this new development, I would like to see more independent viewpoints, as well as comments from Francois Mitterand and the French government. But if this turns out to be true, that is very sad news indeed.

I was in Rwanda in 1994 at the end of the civil war. Sad to say the people on both sides suffered tremendously.

Good story, but am surprised they don't also mention reports of Mitterand's son being deeply involved in selling arms to the Hutus - and how this might relate to Mitterand's "obsession".
