Put away the flags

On this July 4, we would do well to renounce nationalism and all its symbols: its flags, its pledges of allegiance, its anthems, its insistence in song that God must single out America to be blessed.

Is not nationalism -- that devotion to a flag, an anthem, a boundary so fierce it engenders mass murder -- one of the great evils of our time, along with racism, along with religious hatred? Full Story »

Depressing blame the victim piece. Author cherry picks American history looking for bad stuff, and totally omitting the good things. America created democracy, freed the slaves, created a free market economy that made its citizens wealthy, crushed the Nazis, went to the moon, and prevented nuclear war with the Soviets. I'm proud of these accomplishments, and I have a right to wave my flag, and sing patriotic songs, especially on the 4th of July.

If one really studies history, some truths come out. Most US school history books do not even mention the Philippine-American War, nor its atrocities.
