The basis for the about face by the FDA is not explained. The article says the FDA says people with mercury allergies should avoid mercury fillings, but does not say what proportion of the population has mercury allergies, nor how to test for them.

I have mercury allergies. Over 30% of the population has mercury allergies, as discovered when thimerisol (containing mercury) was used in contact lens solution decades ago. I think the FDA position is extremely weak.
