Dispute could derail energy bill

Wrestling over fuel economy increases threatened to derail energy legislation in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, as backers of a plan to set a 35 mile-per-gallon standard by 2020 said they were looking for compromise with automakers and their supporters.

Until articles on CAFE standards start to mention what the norm is in Europe, making it quite clear that higher standards are not at all unreasonable, people will mistakenly get the impression that US automakers and their supporters are reasonable people. Disclaimer: I drive a Honda Civic Hybrid and was getting about 45 mpg the last time I paid any attention.
