Death or Glory Part III of IV

American soldiers think our press is bad to them, but we get off light compared to the Brits. One British soldier told me that when he made a journey of several hours across London, in uniform, not a single person acknowledged him. 1. What does bad press have to do with strangers not acknowledging soldiers? 2. London being a huge city like New York, I can't imagine people acknowledging any stranger, military or not. 3. How do you go about acknowledging a soldier's duty in Iraq if you don't know whether he or she has ever been there? Do civilians have to start memorizing the meanings of patches and ribbons? 4. This sentence floors me: "Because the 278th took the smart approach, despite all the people who have died from IEDs, I’m sure that number is vastly less than it could have been." Nothing like hedging and qualifying smack in the middle of declarations about smart approaches resulting in vast numbers. 5. Can it be considered journalism if the story about bedouins killing smugglers isn't checked out? And no indication of why bedouins would kill smugglers. 6. "one of our soldiers nearly had to shoot one Iraqi man’s dog—a frequent occurrence—" The reader needs to know why this is a frequent occurence: the dogs are dangerous? the American soldiers are sadists? Other? 7. Why the word "caught" about Iraqi and Iranian border guards having tea together? Is there a rule against fraternizing? 8. What is the blogger's role here? Is he in the service? A veteran gone back as a civilian? A freelance on his own dime? 9. What does Fox News have to do with it? 10. This blog seems to be written for people who have been to Iraq. For the rest of us, it just raises too many questions that it doesn't seem to see the need to answer.
