This article gives a run down of what "Taliban" may actually mean, and takes a look at the realities of attempting to separate different factions of the Taliban through negotiations.

A more common refrain is this: ‘You cannot buy an Afghan. You can only rent him.’ In other words, he can be persuaded, but never won over. That, more than anything, may jeopardise Mr Miliband’s hopes of a peace settlement.
