In Iraq's four-year looting frenzy, the allies have become the vandals

British and American collusion in the pillaging of Iraq's heritage is a scandal that will outlive any passing conflict

Fly into the American air base of Tallil outside Nasiriya in central Iraq and the flight path is over the great ziggurat of Ur, reputedly the earliest city on earth. Seen from the base in the desert haze or the sand-filled gloom of dusk, the structure is indistinguishable from the mounds of fuel dumps, stores and hangars. Ur is safe within the base compound. But its walls are pockmarked with wartime shrapnel and a blockhouse is being built over an adjacent ... Full Story »

A nice compilation of facts about a story most other reporters have forgotten for three years. The headline may be a bit over the top, but again that is not the work of the writer but rather the efforts of a "rim man" or copy editor. It's important to judge the story, not the headline.

Compared to the deaths of 650,00 people, maybe the loss of humanity's patrimony isn't such a big deal. This article reminds us of what is being lost due to the invasion and occupation of Iraq. This is a depressing report on the decimation of Iraq's archeological history. We all knew that museums were raided and art treasures stolen in volume following the Bush invasion, but the oganized rip-off of Iraq's heritage continues full force, much of it seeminly bound to US profiteers. The style of the article is even and non-intrusive - the story speaks for itself.
