This article is an example of news organizations’ efforts to acknowledge health disparities in diabetes and heart disease, and also to report accurately on a study. That is why the author distinguishes between “white” and other groups. At the same time, I agree that pitting “white” against “other groups” creates a false dichotomy. And finally, there is so little information about “other groups” that the audience, at minimum, is left uninformed. It would have been better for the author to elaborate on the reasons why one might separate population groups in when studying trans fats and what, if anything, is known about trans fats in each one.
