A cautionary tale in healthcare reform

Two decades ago, New York passed a law requiring insurers to accept all applicants, even those with preexisting conditions. Now, premiums in the state are the highest in the nation by some estimates.

A factual story on New York's experience in outlawing insurance company abuse but not requiring all residents to be covered..

New York's experience isn't surprising. It's one of our many US examples of what doesn't work. All one has to do to find a system that works is to look at any other wealthy democracy. All require everyone to be covered, make the standard plan not-for-profit with standard rates and institute some form of cost control.

This article makes an important point. Reforming health insurance and healthcare is a complex set of inter-related issues and no simple or single issue will resolve this set of issues. This story is an important read.

Most interesting when you consider New York's experience with mandatory coverage, without a requirment that all persons purchase insurance. Costs have sky-rocketed with no end in sight, congress had indeed take heed of New York's experience before they water down the "Be insured" thoughts of coverage. Or there will be a new national inflation rate never before seen!!!
