I'm going to start by stating my prejudice: I have interviewed and met Tony Fauci a number of times. We have spoken at length, sometimes not just on HIV/AIDS, and I have tremendous respect for him. He is one of the most knowledgeable people about HIV/AIDS in the world. This is the equivalent of an op-ed, giving factual information about HIV/AIDS. The information is scientifically accurate, as is the history of research on the disease and its treatment. And, despite the increased numbers of drugs and drug regimens available, the story is as dire as it was when I covered it five years ago or eight years ago. The the issues related to why more people in developing nations are not receiving antiretroviral drugs are not explained. It is a political issue and, perhaps, should not be included here. Certainly, no U.S. government official will touch it in such a publication. You may note that Dr. Fauci lists condom use and "provision of cleans needles" for IV drug abusers as mean of preventing HIV transmission. Unfortunately, the Bush administration is opposed to both and has greatly decreased its distribution of condoms, preferring instead to push "abstinence," which the medical establishment knows is not effective. Dr. Fauci is not in a position to criticize the administration in such an article. All we can do is read between the lines.
